I am curious as to which zones on the mainland can actually grow, and enjoy, pineapples.
Anybody out there?
Anybody out there grow Pineapples?
Well, I have a pineapple plant, but no pineapples. I started it from the top of a pineapple I bought. Just happened to notice what looked like roots under the leaves, peeled some of the leaves, stuck in rooting hormone and in the soil. Voila! I've tried to do the same since with others but no luck. Must have to be at a certain stage. Do you know much about their care? If you have tips for making mine grow LMK. Jenny
They grow here in South Florida but I don't grow them. One of my favorite memories of Oahu is driving on Kunia Road with pineapple plants growing on both sides.
I have a pineapple plant that is finally taking off. I am not too sure what to do with it so will bumble along. I am putting it in a much larger pot this week so maybe it will soon be happy enough to make fruit.
I have one growing in a pot here in Iowa. It isn't making much progress, but it is rooted.
Hi there!...Made a fruit salad the other day and decided to put the top of the pineapple in the garden since I had seen a friend growing pineapples in her garden. They do very well for her.

How long does it take for the plant to produce babies? Great picture Kyle.
Brugie, this red plant had pups (3) when a friend of mine bought it in Chicago.Look at the base of the plant in the pic.
I have been growing one for going on 4 years now as a house plant....hasn't grown, hasn't died. This summer I decided to put it outside where it could get morning sun for a good four hours. I have started getting new top growth. I'm sure I won't get a fruit this year, but maybe next.
I didn't know they were related to bromeliads until recently.
edited for spelling :-)

Well...here we cut the tops off, dry them for 4 days to whenever we get around to planting them and then stick them in cinder soil...or rocks or...
Being Bromeliads, they really don't need bigger pots, just fertilizer! Full sun! Water!
Fert.: Triple 14 until they begin to produce fruit and then a low N. Put fert in the lower bracts of the plant. Chicken manure is good too.
Looks like lots of zones can grow them. Super.
A fresh Pine is to die for!...
Those babies are what prompted me to ask how long it takes.
Guess I'll just wait and see, if I can wait that long. LOL!
OK Aloha I am taking mine outside until it begins to get cold. Maybe that is why in 2 years I just have a pretty houseplant. I want a pineapple. Maybe if I follow your fertilizer suggestions, keep it out this year, in for the winter, and back out next spring then I will have fruit. Thanks, Jenny
OH...HA...the question? Well around here it takes1 year to a pineapple from a "keiki" and 1.5 years from a cut/dried top.
Oh my, I have some waiting to do. Thanks.
I should have had a pineapple by now. Well, this makes me more determined! I will have one next year. Jenny
Aloha HD has them but they are pretty expensive! Haven't tried one yet - they have little pineapples on top but now sure if they would ever mature. Friend had one did OK till winter, then died soon as temps dropped a bit. (You could pop a few in my box if it hasn't flown yet...:)))
I put my pineapple plant outside yesterday morning and I swear it looked better today. Hope it is not just wishful thinking. Jenny
I have three waiting to fly!!! Got hit with stomach flu so it will go next week. Sorry.
bump....
When will it make fruit????
I grow pineapple 2 from cut top and dried 4 days and planted in potting soil ( large pot) 3 years ago and now it get so HUGE.. but no baby pineapple?? I need to take pix and post it.
Now I have 2 extra that I just bought and ate the fresh pineapple. I will have 2 extra to plant! :o) My family hates that plant cause it sting them when they walk pass by but I love them! LOL

I did get a pineapple! I put it outside this spring and have watered it every once in awhile and fertilized it once. In fact I even got it caught up in the weed eater by accident. Shortly thereafter it began to bloom. Soon we should be eating pineapple. Plus it has quite a few new little plants that I can root. Now remember this was from a pineapple bought from a grocery story about 3 years ago. I'm thrilled. Jenny
I once grew a pineapple from the top of a supermarket fruit.
My dad used to call it the "Plant of Death" because of the lethal serrated leaves. It really did cut you if you so much as brushed up against it.
Here in Zone 10a, I have grown a number of pineapples from the crowns of store-bought fruit. For the last few years I have been able to keep them outdoors year around with a bit of overhead protection in the winter. They remind me of my childhood years in Ewa Beach, Hawai'i. Naturally, I always start my plants from Hawaiian pineapples.
