What is this cute critter?

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

LOL....this is so cute and funny! I've never ever seen anything like it. I was looking at my Moonflower Vine and found it. It is so tiny, I would say about 1/16 of an inch with little white (not like a cat) spikes. Any ideas?

Here it is on DH's finger.

Help - I have these in my salvia, and on my eggplant. What's the best way to get rid of them??????

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Machine gun, grenade, shotgun, flame-thrower - whatever you have to!! These guys are pains!!

(I actually use Safer's Soap and it works well.)

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

OMG...it's bad??? And I thought it was cute! Ughhhhh, it's the first I've ever seen! What do they do?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am sure you are about to see many more!!! They add snow all over your plants!! like flocking!!
lol

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Well dang!!! I'm really bummed now....do I use Safer's Soap like Carter said? I don't have that....I'll go look to see if I have anything for a Mealy Bug! Thanks you guys....I know I'm dense when it comes to all these new critters!

Chill everybody...its a cryptomeria a mealy bug predator..they look just like mealybugs.....only notice the Horns around the edges. And its bigger than a mealybug. A good bug...too bad they look so much alike.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Bug Spray

2 tbsp alcohol
1 tsp dish soap

In a hand spray bottle. fill the rest of the bottle with water. spray on the plant.

Soak the plant until it runs off

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Awwww see Brin! lol its a good bug! :o) lol I laughed so hard with the "Chill everybody"

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I got those here...in my Elm tree..they fell out of the tree and landed everywhere...thought it was kinda sorta snowing...I have them every year about this time..LOL...told my hubby what they were...he thought it was funny...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hey, capture some of those and save them for when people have mealy bug infestations. You could get rich quick. LOL!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

We use to release them indoors at the Botanical center to control mealies without spraying. :-)

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Eclipse, thanks for identifying this bug... I always thought they were mealy bugs. Does anyone have more info? I would like to know how to distinguish these guys from the 'bad' mealy bugs. I tried doing a web search for 'cryptomeria mealy bug predator' and only got irrelevant links for pests of cryptomeria shrubs.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

do a search under biological insect control.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I guess this proves you are what you eat! LOL. I have never heard about these before and I sure have never had them when mealy bugs have invaded. Brinda, so you can keep your new, little pet unless you already squashed him dead! LOL

I gave a fast search for him also Tom to get a better look but could not find him anywhere either on a quick look see on google

Thanks for the links Shirley and all the information everyone!

Kell....he is dead! I didn't kill him on purpose, but when I was moving him from my hand to DH's I squished most of his side off! Ugh....ick!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks for posting the links, Brugie. No wonder I couldn't find it searching for 'cryptomeria' - looks like the name is actually 'Cryptolaemus montrouzieri'. The 2nd article also says they're from Australia and only survive overwinter in coastal areas of SoCal. So I think it's likely that Brinda's now-deceased bug, found in OK, was indeed some sort of mealybug. Brinda, don't feel too bad about squishing him!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

great info. Thanks

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Brinda, dead but not forgotten! LOL

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

ahh geez.... and here I was looking forward to a naming contest for Brinda's new buddy....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Really Ms Munché, imagine killing your pet before it even has a name! TSK TSK Brinda!

LOL you guys!

Well....I've searched everywhere in my backyard and can't find another one! And honestly, I really did think it was cute. It was so strange not to be cute. And it really did have little white horns! That is what makes me believe it is what Kyle said!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So just tell me this Brinda, what did yo put on his tombstone? Sadly, I keep seeing an itty bitty blank one.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Well, Kell....DH has to do the burial! I just didn't have the heart! Nor have I had the heart to visit the burial site! Hopefully soon though!!! LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I think your little bug reincarnated himself and brought about a million of his buddies to my house! I had no mealies, now I have many! Time to get out the alcohol and water.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh no Susie....will you spray the alcohol on? you can't do it by hand cany ou?

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

so, what's the easiest way to tell the difference, the good from the bad?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, I'll use a quart sprayer and only spray the bugs I see. I will have to keep it up till no more are seen for a few weeks.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think one of those web sites I posted showed the difference, Linda.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I think all of mine are the bad kind. They don't have the "sticker" thingies that the good ones do.
