Are you SURE you live in Kansas? You wouldn't be pulling our leg now, wouldja? LOL It looks strangely like my back yard in Miami where the only maintenance was done with a whip and a chair to keep the stuff from covering my house. Now, living only about 150 miles north of there, I have to baby everything but the Hibiscus.

the arborvitae in the back gives away it's kansashood

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

The arborvitae ,sure gives it away allright!!!
Yes I use straw, lot cheaper, heck this is Kansas, the wheat state, straw is plentiful here.
The monstera gets about 4 hours of straight sunlight from about 11am,until3 pm.
The whip and chair comes out next month, when the 100* heat sets in,things really grow then.
Mosquitos are terrible this year, with all the rain we've had,and the humidity has been extremely high also, but in August that pretty much all goes away when the dry heat comes in.

You are an amazing gardener, Don. I hope you are relaxing in your garden and enjoying it too. You've done an incredible amount of work on it.
