Come on you guys...surely someone has seen this before???

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Missed this one,I have only seen it on one of my Species this year.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've seen it, but not that far out.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

My unnamed pink brug does that sometimes, but not very often. I've never seen one stick out that far.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Well thanks you all! She must want to be pollinated pretty badly! LOL!!!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I was thinking the same, she's one sexy babe! Going to have to watch close if you want to pollinate her, something else migh beat you to it.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Considering that this is a January seedling and I don't have any idea what its traits and characteristics will be, I'm not pollinating it myself. If the moths and bees decide to do it, okay by me... When it opens, I will have around 15-20 different varieties/cultivars/crosses blooming at the same time. If anything does take it'll be the great mystery brug LOL!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Sounds as if you have a good collection of brugs going.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Funny, last night I was looking at my new brug with the long tendrils and noticed its stamen is much further down than most but yours has it beat! I have a good name for yours Gretchen, Shameless Hussy! LOL

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

She definitely looks like she is in heat, doesn't she?

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

LOL! Kell, I knew you were going to say that! Yes Mary, she sure does! Gloria...its a good start, but wait til next year. I have plans for lots more beds, and where I had tomatoes this year will be all brugs, with a little luck, and the Good LORD willing :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL gretchen, you are brug crazy now! No hope1 Such a naural high, huh?

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

No doubt about it, Kell!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Not to worry, you can always buy tomatoes at the fruit stand. Need the room for more brugs!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

That's what I think, Gloria! I had some delicious tomatoes in May and early June, but after that it just gets too hot to grow good ones here. And, the soil is so well amended in that part of the garden, the brugs should be very happy there :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And so will you be!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

YES, I will!

The bees are crazy for this one tonight:

And, not a very good picture, but here's another protruding stigma on this plant. Maybe it'll be a trait of the cultivar:

At least you have bees. They are hard to find around the midwest anymore. Lots of farmers are now renting hives of them. I can usually get some if I spray bee scent, but without it, I have very few cantaloupe.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Shirley, interesting re the bees in your area. There were a few years, a few years ago. when we didn't have an abundance of bees. My daddy told me to plant crepe myrtles and and the bees would return. I did and, wow, did the bees ever return!!! Honestly, you would not believe the bees. I cannot wait to see if I will benefit with a seed pod. So far, that has not been the case, that i know of...however, the crepe myrtle honey is a hot item!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Wish we could grow them here, but all I hear is "don't waste your money". I guess Iowa gets just a little too cold for crape myrtles. I read that they are root hardy to zone 5, but I'd hate to have to wait on one every year to come back a little from the roots.

Here she is opening:

And a side view:

I sure hope she shows some color tomorrow. This brug is over 7' tall now and I have high hopes for some color...any color! But at least she smells heavenly :)

Have at least one thing going for her, smells good.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Your pics are just great Gretchen. So tell me, when the bee is done, does the stamen get that dark tip look like after you pollinate it with a brush?

I have lots of Crape Myrtles but never noticed they brought bees. I can do without the bees here! I have noticed that in my brug garden where I have not pollinated anything, I have tons of volunteer pods. The center of it is full of suaveolons. I wonder if they are the bee magnet. I was supposed to go in and dig them out this weekend, but I didn't get to it. In the past, I never have gotten even 1 volunteer pod.

Brugie, Crape Myrtles grow like weeds. I have a huge one in my front bed that is almost taking it over. I cut it way back every year, but it shoots up again even bigger. My DH hates it, he says it is so out of proportion. I just got a lecture about it again this afternoon. It gets just covered in blooms so I have a hard time saying take it out. As soon as it finishes, I take it down by more than half. I planted the wrong size for the place. They come in all sizes, so I was negligent in not researching the variety better.

Kell, yes the stamen turns brown and kind of dry looking. Your crape myrtle is gorgeous.

Still no color today, and the flower shape isn't very pretty either... Oh well, there's always hope for some of the others :)
