It is good I am a dermatological nurse! LOL!!
I have warts!!
EEeeewww!! What IS that?
Aaackkk ! ! That is scary looking :'(
Ick! Looks like a fungus among us!!!
Eeeeewwwww! Ok Kell...what is that? It looks nasty! Eeeeewwwww!
My word! What is it? Looks like it is trying to grow roots.
Break out the Blistex!!!
LOL, Kell, it has lost it's shock value to me now that I've seen it a couple of times. Nobody wants to take a stab at identifying it. lol, it's just plain ickky.
An alien pod is my guess.
It looks exactly like warts I have seen on people!! EXACTLY!!
Gross me out!
I had one on Rosamond pod last year and Tonny told me not to worry about it. They are on about 6 pods. All those pods were still totally encased in their large calyx. The one pod on the tree that didn't have the calyx, had no warts!!
EEEEEWWWWW!!! (Shudder!) That is so gross! This picture evokes the exact opposite response of your wonderful dark pink brug pic.
Kell, are you saying that even though this looks really bad, it doesn't affect the health of the plant or the viability of the seeds from the pod?
Gross!!
That is definitely gross looking! What causes it and what can we do to prevent it from happening to other Brugs???
I have a guess - I have had something like that happen on leaves in a greenhouse. Something to do with heat & humidity as I recall. The cells were "exploding". If those pods were all still in the calyx maybe that acted like a mini greenhouse & did the same thing to the pods. (Maybe??????????????????)
I do not think so Tom, though I could be wrong. I did grow out the seedlings on the affected pod last year. It was R X RK, I could not let it get tossed! I believe it has some sort of icky from being enclosed so totally in a calyx. When I peel the calyx off and expose them to air, they stop growing, turn black and dry up. Much like a human wart does after treatment. LOL
It is Edema, caused by too much water at the celluar level, in this case cause by the retained calyx, the cells swell and rupture leaving this. It doesn't affect anything...
So...my question is...is there a benefit to leaving the calyx intact? I have removed them from my pods, and they are all doing fine, but now I'm wondering if they'll continue to thrive without the calyx?
Sometimes I remove mine when they start plumping up so the calyx won't be tight on the bud. Sometimes I just split the calyx so the bud can grow and it seems to hang there staying green for a long time. I don't know if it hurts to remove them or not. I can say that if you try to remove the calyx to early, you can easily pull the new pod off, so I wouldn't try that. It happened to me a couple of times before I got a little smarter. LOL!
