I have a bad problem with my Gypsy Queen that i recieved in the fall. She has been perfectly healthy until this week. Trish and Vicki Harding have been to my house in the last month and all my plants were healthy and still are ecept GQ. If you are one of the persons that recieved some of the 600 cuttings from me in the Fall you are SAFE. There is NO WAY any of them could have been INFECTED/EXPOSED because the cuttings came from large plants growing in the ground that had to be cut back for winter and I only recieved GQ in the fall which was in the potting area of my large yard. Do Not Panic !!! Only very few people need to check their plants. If you got any cuttings from me this spring/summer get rid of them or isolate them from your other plants
Important Please Read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dreaded SB,Sorry Donna,I am glad you are sharing pictures for all to see, this is nothing to mess with, please share all info you can,how long it took to show, disposal method.
I hope this is a small outbreak for you and your collection is not harmed.
I put the whole plant in the bottom of the trash. I want it off my property. DH said burn it. No I want it off my property. I'm not taking any chances. Going to dig a piece out and have it tested if it doesn't cost a arm and a leg. Root I got it in the fall and is has always been healthy. I even bloomed once in the GH over winter. She has bloomed her head off all spring and summer. Just this week it showed up while I was out of town for 3 days. I know because I just sent a cutting out before I left. I am notifying the few people I sent it to now. One said his didn't show any signs and he is isolating it from his others. I told him to trash it. I believe this weird harsh weather has a lot to do with it and that is it a weak plant. Thankfully my Hawaiian Double White, L'Amour and new aquired Mountain Magic were no where near it. Everything else can be easily replaced if affected.
Gosh Donna, this is too bad. I hope that you won't have trouble with any other plants.
That is so sad Donna! I am so glad you found it now. From what I understand from Monika, multi yellows can catch it just by being in the presence of another that has it but does not show it yet. They are very susceptible. That is why I have a CG in my front and a another yellow multi hybrid in the back as the miners used canaries in the coal mines.
The good news is only suavs and yellow multihybrids get it so easily. If you use good technique when handling your brugs, it should not spread to your other ones.
This is not your fault. I hear lots of people now have it popping up in their yellows. You are doing everything right! Keep a close eye on your yellows and suavs. I know when I water my eyes go up and down their stalks everytime.
Donna, I'm so sorry about that! I sure hope by taking quick action you've stopped this in its tracks. Good luck!!!
I'd like a bit more info on SB from you experienced bruggers. Kell, are you saying it's possible for a brug to have SB and not show any symptoms - i.e. a silent carrier? Are some brugs totally resistant, so they could be carrying the virus for years and you'd never know it until they come in contact with a more susceptible variety? Or do they all show symptoms eventually, it's just a question of how long it takes?
I've heard before that yellows are more susceptible - I'll keep a close eye on my C.Grimaldi - so far he's perfectly healthy after 3 years. Aside from a mite infestation this spring and heat stress on Cypress Gardens (from which it's now recovering) my brugs are doing well... I hope my luck holds!
Oh, Donna! I'm so sorry!!! Thank goodness you caught it before it got out of control! I pray that it was isolated to the one plant and that you have no more SB problems!!! God bless you, Gretchen
Im so sorry Donna!!
Tom, theres lots of good info on it here. Lets see if I can find some for you. LOTS of reading, but excellent invaluable info.

I have posted all the full size shots I took as I destroyed and inspected the pieces here if anyone wants to look http://community.webshots.com/album/164263124WFhYPE
Excellent job Donna,I hope this will help others, thank you for posting them.
Did this come on quick? What was the time period from the point you first noticed it?
So sorry to hear this Donna. I hope that's the only one you have. I had a Sun Ray last year that I had to destroy. I agree with you that I think this weird wet weather is a problem for our Brugs.
I made cuttings on Wednesday and by tuesday when I got back home from mini vacation it was there. It came on really fast.
These photos are invaluable...quick question here - I encountered something that ended up looking a little like this, but I thought it was because the brug was dry then probably got a bit too much rain water - ended up with the whole top layer peeling off in a slime - I threw the plant away... was this my fault because of inconsistent watering or was it a brugbug? Not meaning to hijack the thread - maybe someone could answer me directly.... Thanks!
Donna, thank you so much for posting these photos - it's very informative. And thanks to Shelly, too for posting those links for me. I learned a lot about SB - posting all this information helps everyone because we can learn from each other and help prevent unknowingly spreading diseases. I thought SB was a virus but it's actually a fungus. Now that I've seen all those pictures I will know what to look for - I'll just try not to be too paranoid about it. Is there any work being done to identify and develop resistant plants? Probably brugs will have to be bred like tomatoes, specifically for resistance to diseases. Is there any any effective treatment or preventative fungicide that can be applied?
Holy cow! Now I'm worried, I'm so new to brugs, I never even noticed all those posts about strangelbrand leisions.
I'll have to check mybrugs, and read more information about this, You have to throw the plant away? if it gets this?
kathy
I can't find information on what causes this?
kathy
KathyAnn, please read through the posts that Shelly linked to, they are most informative. In a nutshell: Strangelbrand is a fungal disease, there is no cure, infected plants must be destroyed.
