Introducing ::: My first little water garden

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Natalyn brought me these plants last week ... I wasn't sure where I would put them. I was excited when they started blooming and knew I needed to make a decision.

Then I found the oval tub and stand at Cracker Barrel for $15 (for both pieces!) So I took a trip up to Phelps Pottery to get the bamboo pump we saw when we were there. I'm thrilled with my little 'pond'.

Thanks Natalyn!!!

WOW!

Kewl little pond! I have never seen them bloom before.

Mine get that big, then the fish start eating the roots till there is nothing left........

guess I should put them in another part of the pond until they bloom and then let the fish have them.

Wow, I am impressed! That is TOOOOOOOO cute!

I'm happy the water hyacinths bloomed for you too. Nat

Isn't that adorable!! Welcome to water gardening!

Brace yourself...you'll be thinking bigger before too long. :)

Hi, this is just fabulous for those od us who just want a touch of water gardening!!! Can this particular plant be kept small so your little garden will continue to look like the picture? Also, what else should I know if I decide to copy your idea (this is the ultimate compliment, you know)?

Also, you might be interested in a posting I just made called "Pond in a Pot". thanks for your advice, jeani4

Jean, water hyacinths are vigerous growers to say the least. They multiply through producing runners that make new plants. What I did in my barrel water garden, is just periodically remove excess plants and compost them. Nat

Thanks, Nat. I'm definitely mulling this one over. It is just so nice looking!

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Jean, there is a water lettuce that stays a little smaller that might work well for you also.

Lois,I love your little water garden.
Have you added more water gardens?
I sure am going to keep my eye out at Cracker Barrel-I just love your tub & stand-it made the perfect little water garden.
Isn't Nat,the greatest!!

Colie, I was with Lois when she found the bamboo fountain at a local gardening center. I can't tell you how many times I have kicked myself in the behind because I didn't get one.

And the sharing of water hyacinths, if you keep them in a water garden - they multiply so rapidly, you will beg people on the street to take them! Of course, I am very much aware that these are invasive and our southern friends cannot even consider having them as they are such a problem.

Thanks everyone~

Yes, christmascactus, I did get one more fountain type thingy - bought at the enormous flea market near Galax, VA, Labor Day weekend. I'll post a picture this summer when it's pretty again. But no other 'ponds' yet - maybe this year, though ....

Jeani, Natalyn is the expert on that plant - in fact, I'm going to have to get another one from her this year.

Nat, how do you over-winter them?

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm a bad bad southerner, hehe- I have water hyacinths! Well, the fish ate them so I think they are dead now, hehe. Mine didnt bloom though!

Lois, that's the cutest thing ever. Can't wait for more pictures. Have you added any fish yet? Some mosquito fish would eat mosquito larva and add movement to the pond. That and you can train them to eat outta your hand!

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

They need a lot of light to be overwintered, so most folks trash them and buy new ones in the spring. They cost about $2.99 each - - and you only need to start with one! I'll get one and will have more to share by June.

Lois,I can't wait to see more pictures of your water gardens.
Nat,I hope you will be able to find you a Bamboo fountain.

Hi Lois, since you like little water gardens, you might possibly be interested in a "Pond in a Pot" video which I came across and posted under water gardens. it certainly looks easy enough-plan on trying it this spring. jean

Hi Granny,
You have a wonderful little piece of marvel! And I'm stunned by the flowering of that, being blue!

I also checked on some details of the bamboo fountain and on that site, found some more lovely things that one likes to have in gardens. It gave me some new ideas too.

Thanks Dinu.

Nat, if you want me to get you one, I'll be more than happy to. Just let me know. I'll be coming to Knoxville in the near future, I'm sure.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Lois, If you don't mind, would you pick me one up? Did yours include a pump or did you have to buy one separate? I saw that the one on Cherry Blossom Garden didn't include a pump.

Let me know how much I owe you and it's ok to wait and bring when we go to the GARU. Of course if you can't pick me one up, I'll have to make another trip up to Blountville!!

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Nat, I'll be happy to get you one. The pump came with mine, but it was higher priced too, to include it. I'll probably call you from that store when I go up there. I remember there were 3 sizes. I got the medium sized. Do you think you want the biggest or medium or the smallest one?

I'll plan on bringing it when I meet you for the round-up. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. You need more cool stuff in your yard - ha! ha!

I wonder when your hummingbirds will be migrating back. Do you know?

I just wanted to say that is the most adorable fountain!
It gave me an idea that I can use for an old iron plant stand.
Oh~ and~ Yes..... A Big Happy Birthday to you also.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Lois, I think I want the large one, or the medium if they don't have anymore large ones.. And I remember the prices being reasonable on all of them so it's ok to get me one. I am going to put it in my barrel water garden this year. Thanks for doing this for me! :-) Nat

Hixson, TN(Zone 7a)

That is so pretty!

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Thanks you guys. It's almost time to put some plants in it again - I cleaned off my deck this morning, but I have to make myself wait for another month before it's safe for plants .....
