I bought a couple horehound plants -in a weak moment- and they're growing like mad. Problem is, I know nothing about it!! Can it be used for anything?? :)
Horehound question???
Hmm....coughdrops? The only good thing I know to use it for is for sore throats and coughs.. (I buy the "candy" kind.)
From one of my books:
Make an infusion by steeping 1 oz of fresh or dried horehound leaves in a pint of boiling water. Allow it to sttep only 10 minutes. Strain off the leaves, then measure the quantity of liquid remaining. Add twice as much honey as liquid, mix well, and bottle. Too soothe a cough, take 1 teaspoon at a time, about four times a day.
(Other readings I've done show that too much can be a bad
thing.)
Candied horehound can be made by making an infusion and then adding sugar, then boil until the mixture reaches a thick consistency. Pour into a shallow pan and cut into squares when cool.
Hope that helps!
Yep. I knew it. I knew if anyone would know, it'd be you. "The Informal Informational University of Horseshoe" !!
"The Informal Informational University of Horseshoe" !!
Hah! Flattery will get you everywhere! (Er, sumpin' like dat.)
I grew horehound some years back and remember looking up what to do with it. The book I have still has the info highlited. (I luv them yellow hi-liter pens!)
Can't take credit for knowledge on this one...just knew where to go back and review.
If you make some candy, I'll buy some from ya!!
Okay! I'll have to check out that candy making. But I won't sell it to you. You've been so helpful on several things, I'd consider it due payment to send ya some!
Horehound grows very well here (dry heat) but it will spread easily from seeds. If youdon't want it all over your yard be sure to cut it way back as soon as it starts to follow. The seed heads stick to you like burrs and end up EVERYWHERE.
The homemade candy is doable but a little horehound goes a VERY long way. (grin). It sure smells good tho, when you brush up against it.

Howdy Chris...long time no see.
sounds like you're surrounded in horehound.
I wonder if I still have some growing here someplace, now that you mention it seeding so easily. Reckon I better go check!
Howdy yourself Shoe,
I'm still around. Had to go back to work so don't have near as much time as I used to, to post, but I still check the boards regularly.
It's probably all over the place and you haven't noticed it. It gets in animal fur just like burrs. I planted one little plant from seed years ago (to make homemade horehound candy). Haven't had to plant any since. There's plenty all round. The good news is...if you seriously want to get rid of it, just pull it when it's young. (before it has time to set seed) And like I said, it smells good when you brush it.
Chris
thanks! I may have just mowed over it so many times then mines gone.
Don't work too hard, and pop in when ya can!
