Huge Datura Leaves??

North Saanich, Canada

JUst wondering if it is normal to have datura leaves this size?? The plant is about 18 inches high, and as you can see, some of the lower leaves are just huge!!! And I'm very happy to see one bloom starting. I think it is a double yellow, started from seed.

Glenda, I do not know if it is normal, but I saw one last week at the nursery and the leaves looked almost identical, in size/color to yours. The plant was from FL and I'm in Arky. It had absolutely beautiful bluish/purple blooms...

What you feeding them !!!!!!. My only double yellow finally died this week after trying to get it to grow for two years.

Hi Glenda,
Wow..those are big leaves! Or you have a very small hand..lol!! It will be interesting to see what color it is.

I feed about once a week with water soluble 20-20-20, and then every couple of days I use an organic gertilizer called RainGrow, made here in Canada. My brugs and dat sure seem to thrive on that!!
Here's apicture of my three brugs, each of which is starting blooms.

I hope your flowers are as big! What a sight that would be.

Glenda, speaking of water soluble fertilizer - I have some fert, 13-13-13 and it is brown granules, with zero instructions on the bag. I tried dissolving it in water, over night, and most of it didn't dissolve. Does anyone know how that type of fert should be applied??? Good luck on your dat, I have one just like it, I think, but it's a baby...

Sherrylike, not sure, but what you have maybe sounds like slow dissolving fertilizer, which is meant to go on in the spring, and it slowly releases over time. It just gets sprinkled on the ground, or I have sometimes mixed it in the soil. I know they put it in the hanging baskets they sell at the nurseries. Just a possibility??

ggd, the fertilizer is likely aiding the growth and leaf size. I would fertilize less so that more energy is directed toward flower production rather than growth.

TARogers, Datura Metel is an annual, which reseeds itself every year. Rarely, it will be a very short-lived perennial, living less than two years, but it is best treated as an annual.

Thank you, Glenda!!! I have 50 lbs of the stuff, bought years ago, still good. So, I called the nursery guy and you are correct. Hope it doesn't kill those dudes I put it on, but then most of it stayed in the bottom of the bucket. I got a streak of bravery today and went out and dug holes and, for better or worse, put 15 brugs in the ground and watered them heavily, with hope of offsetting the fert. I'll just worry about how/where to winter the brugs when the time comes. Whew, I feel so much better...
