For hot summer days, you may want to try this cake which my North Carolina family has made.
“This recipe dates back to the days when you could buy an Orange Crush drink in a brown bottle from the old country store,”

Orange Crush Cake
Henrietta S. Grady of Kenansville
1 cup Crisco
1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
2 1/2 cups sugar
5 eggs
3 cups cake flour (Swans Down)
2 teaspoons orange flavoring
1 cup Orange Crush drink
Frosting:
1/2 stick of butter
3 ounces of cream cheese
1/2 box of powdered sugar
Orange Crush drink
Blend Crisco, butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time. Next, add flour and mix well.
Add flavoring. After mixing the batter well, add Orange Crush drink. Place the batter in a well-greased 10-inch tube pan. Bake for one hour and fifteen minutes at 325 degrees.
For frosting, blend butter and cream cheese. Add powdered sugar. Use enough Orange Crush drink to dampen. Spread this frosting on the cooled cake. Decorate with orange slices to add an elegant flair.
