I just love these plants :-)
Passiflora "Clear Sky"
Yes.. Dixie...
It is a lovely flower for sure.. and so many of them on the vine at once.. and this is bearing fruit all over the place for me... I'm not used to haveing fruit.. I was wondering how do you know when it' s ripe....are yours bearing fruit by now there in AL..
P. caerulea Clear sky.. the tag says ffor decorative purposes only.. not for consumption. perhaps not good to eat... Gordon
Impressive view GordonHawk! :) Nicely growing passie too.
It's beautiful!! Thank you Gordon :D
What a gorgeous vista and balcony!
I've only been to New York once...as a babe in my mother's arms. I'm too used to wide open spaces and not many people but I will have to visit there *at least* one more time.
Gordon what are the other plants in the picture?
Lily.. thanks for your complements and interest... oh there must be 100 of them there.. a bit of lawn.. hibiscus on the left.. balloon flower.. impatients.. 1/2 dozen roses with a complete unnderplanting of pink frost trying to take over the world... the tree is a japaneese maple orido nishikii.. stargazer lilly.. a climber the newdawm climbing rose.. the table has a dozen varities of the hottest peppers known to man... devils tongue.. goat weed habaneros of a few types.. charleston hot.. fatalii .. about a 1/2 dozen brugs.. the angels trumpets.. a few plumerias.. a pine called dragoneye pine a variegated one.. and lots of things I know are in there but would be hard to point out from that picture .. here's a few photos a little closser then anything of particular interest I'll post that one if I have a picture of it Gordon
If you have a close-up of your Japanese Maple, the Dragoneye Pine, and the Plumerias I would love to see them.
My DH shares a similar interest in the hot peppers.....I asked him to do the picking, chopping and eating. :b
here's the dragoneye pine.. an alltime favorite of mine... well a real bad shot of it.. seems the Passaflora star of clevedon and a rose is incroaching in this one... but you can see the green and white needles behind the flowers I'll try t o get some better photos of the others... the overall picture you saw is of the front 1/2 of the roof garden.. it goes on in the back as far with as much stuff... but no city views... so what do you grow in moosejaw... aside from mosquitoes.. Gordon
I have: 6 different passiflora (vitifolia, beloti, Coral Seas, Incense, Incarnata, Ruby Glow and one or two I can't think of), Adenium, 1 Plumeria (about to bloom),1 C. ugandense, Allamada (1 yellow, 1 pink, 1 white), 1C. bungeii, 2 Bananas, 4 gingers, oleander, stephanotis, mandevilla, jasmine, 20 different varieties of waterlilies, 1 Ruellia, and a number of new ones from a Dg'er in Florida that I haven't memorized yet. I just posted these pics today: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/449846/
A lot of daylilies, lilies, etc. etc. that are extremely hardy.
More than just mosquitoes :b..... ;)
Your dragoneye pine is very unique...I'd love to see more close-up pics (scenery is also appreciated)! :D
Lily... and Lilys also... ans so many.. you've an impressive array .. and that's not considering your location... given that I'm speachless.. but I smell a greenhouse near by... but given my olafactory organs somewhat blown out y a pile of brugmansias blooming I might be mistaken.. and Plumerias in MooseJaw... gee.. and about to bloom... sure sounds like a greenhouse there... plumerias are definately more difficult the further north you find yourself... but with a high pressure sodium light blooming is so much easier..for everything.. great application of effort t keep so many diverse ones going.. this is the last plumeria I had blooming.. like you I can't quite remember everything.. but here's it's picture.. the cutting came with an inflo starting .. and I kept it and tried rooting .. and managed to get both the roots and the later flowers... Gordon
That is a gorgeous lookin' plumeria Gordon....What is it's name?
No greenhouse here...the poor plummie has lost many buds with the colder weather we've been having. I had it in my dining room window until June......should have left it there this year. My daughter has a glassed in porch off her room, it gets sun from 4 a.m. till two. We are planning on making one however....just picked up a portable one for the wintering them over in the basement).
The water lilies have a long 7 month rest in our basement fridge.
Forgot I also have 9 larger Brugs......they've overwintered in a large sunny room at work.
I should say the bananas and gingers are also new arrivals from Florida.....the naners are less than a foot high. Never grown them before but am hoping I can overwinter them (crossing fingers and toes)!
Lily... That's an unknown to me type plumeria... I got it as a free mystery cutting along with a 5tip Nebels Rainbow I'd ordered from the Aloha Tropicals nursery in Hawaii.. so it's possible it had lost it's name and was sent out that way... asa mystery gift.. I've been growing the plumerias for a number of years .. and personally have the pleasure of thaking one from... seed to flower in 9 months.. I attribute the speed to plenty of ferts... liberal applications of spray-n-grow .. and the fact that after the sprouting of the seed the little plantlet and as it grew it spent everyday up on the rooftop.. sun from 5 am - 8 pm.. and high roof temperatures.. I consider myself in zone 4 through zone 12 .. due to the exposure in the winter and in the summer ... like the otherday at noon and an air temp of 80* F the rubber membrane of the roof was at 145* F..as measured by my 16" cordon blu cooking ...mercury thermometer laying on the roof.. Winds blowing off the roof and onto the plants.. in their little pots sitting right on the roof surface.. take a good bit of heat.. mostly to the roots and soil.. I'm not sure what zone has 145*F temps so I just say zone 12.. I water three times a day.. and things are quite dry at each watering.. if you can keep the roots heated all troughout the growing the plumeras will definately respond.. [ pots sitting on a driveway is an easy effort there ] This early bloomer is now at 1 1/2 yeas old branching and standing almost 6' tall.. I'm hopeing for flowers again real soon.. If I can keep it from being blown over..yet again.. good luck with your plumeria way up there... just keep it heated on the roots..... Gordon
Thanks Gordon...I'm so new to these that every bit of information I get is very appreciated!! I will be following peope's suggestions to the letter the next time my beauty develops buds. I did borrow a book on Plumerias (of course the writer was writing for those in high zones) but he did say that he has seen them grow in Canada in people's windows and thought, because of it's dormancy, it would do very well in the lower zones. He suggested moving the pot off to the side or putting it in the basement when dormancy occured.
Lily.. I don't do dormancy with mine .. I guess even in the tropics theere is a down time.. but here I keep htem alive and growing year round.. I do let them shead their outside leaves at some point in the winter.. and grow out leaves that understand the low light of the inside... these fall as they go outside and they develop leaves used to processing in bright light.. I have the benefit of blooms ususly in midwinter as well as during the summer... greedy well maybe.. but they suffer little Gordon
How old is your plumeria Gordon?
I'm off to work right away but if you find any more pictures please post them.
Saw this thread and thought you might enjoy it Gordon: : http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/434582/#new

well Lily.. most of the ones I have are a few years old.. I've had them for 6-8 years .. the first ones I had I got rid of .. just generic ones and they were taking so much room as they got big.. so I started over with more lovely ones...
I was working on the drip irrigation system.. tryingto leave on a drive south.. I dug out the dragon eye pine to take a picture but never got to it.. I've so many morethings to wire into the watering .. and repair of the old set up.. it's taken me longer... andI had a rain day the otherday.. so I'm behind departure.. but true to form the day before vacation i s when I finally get it up every year.. with no time to balance and tweek it to perfection.. and also true to form the big night blooming cereus is about to bloom... I had it for years and would come back from vacation and ee the huge wilted flower.. then one year I finally saw it.. and sometimes get some flowering inside.. looksl ike I'll miss hte first bloom this year also... you might get somme pictures before I get ot of here.. but maybe not .. catch you in September... all the best .. Gordon
Enjoy your holidays and stay out of Bonnie's and Charlie's way! I'll keep this thread on watch.
Glad to see you back Gordon! :D Please keep posting pictures of your plants.
I'm not sure if you've belonged to Dave's for very long but I hope you will also post scenic pictures of New York in the Photo Forum as well.
I love the look of the fruit on your passie.........will have to show mine what it should be doing. ;)
The DragonEye Pine is very unique, I've never seen a pine with 3 different colors in it's needles.
and a close u pof the pine cones.. if you have never seen such a pine.... proof positive... you can see a good view of the needles... white and a real good white and green... such a love... I had bought it for a client and when he turned the space over to a tennant I went back and rescued it for my garden..
Gordon
My plummie's buds turned black on me......I really, really hope next summer will be hot enough to make mine bloom like yours.
OK the last request was of the Japaneese maple.. one of them.. I've the red which is mostly green this time of year... and the basicly green one that has it's new growth a white and red.. variegation... I'm a real soft touch for varigation.. especially the green/pnk/and white... over and out there Lily.... Gordon
Thank you Gordon. :D
Well thank you there Lily... Good luck with the plumie.... you've got a real hard one for up there... many things can be content with the long days.. but plumies love the heat too.. I hear complaints from southern CA growers it hasn't been hot enough this year to kick them off real well.. i can imagine the difficulty of having them a days drive north..
As for the fruit on my Passie... well I had them for years and had heavenly flowers and never a hit of fruit... and this new to me variety and boom... fruit by the bushel full.. well maybe not quite that much... so done be tooo rough on yours... there OK another picture ... my brugmansia... Texas Pink Gordon
That's one variety of Brugmansia I've never seen before. The scents and colors on your balcony must be amazing! What do your neighbors think of your urban jungle? Have they gotten the gardening bug yet?
Yes.. it is pretty headdy up there.. and tonight at the machine down one level... with the roof door open the Jasmine blooming above is allmost too sweet down here... and as a sweet lover.. [ I add enough sugar to coffee to lighten it to 1/2 & 1/2 color.. I love sweet... ] it's almost too much... niccotina another Jasmine.. the Brugs... maybe a 1/2 dozed blooming .. tonight and the moonflowers and the last of the plumeria.. ..
Oh many of the gardens are moving up top.. more and more use of the roofs every year... development.. and some flowers.. nice to see... the old time users here are the pigeon raisers.. they have coops on the roofs and release their birds to fly about and excercise every day.. the zoom about in formation... one leading the pack... only to have the pack move out from behnd him to a new direction the the first bird then is flying hard to get back into the back of the pack and it's new direction.. pretty birds.. white with brown or balck wings... guess he races or flys them competively... and old Italian passtime in this former Italian neighborhood.. now being gentrified.. Gordon
Please take pictures of him and his birds sometime Gordon. Thank you for posting. :)
