Weeping Redbud, Eastern Redbud, Canadian Redbud, Judas Tree 'Covey (aka Lavender
Hi,
I planted this redbud in June, but wondered if you have information on whether it needs training or not. I have new growth that trails on the ground, and wondered if I was suppose to train this to go upright. I would appreciate any information you have. Mine looks smaller than yours. It's about 24" tall, and not as wide as yours appears to be.
Thanks!
njlsal, I wish I could really answer your question. However, thes tree (1 of 2) is newly planted at a nearby friend's house and he got NO instructions with them.
But, my question is: WHY would you want to train anything UPRIGHT on a Weeping Tree?
I just noticed the new growth a couple days ago, and went to the site that I bought it from (Klehm's Songsparrow Farm), and it says to stake the leading branch until you achieve the desired height. Mine is like your picture in that the main braches are already growing downward. I am only hoping I don't end up with a 2 foot tree that I have to cut off the branches that creep on the ground. Maybe I will call them to get their advice. Thanks anyway.
I too have just purchased one of these trees, in fact its due to be delivered in a couple of days. I will ask and see what I can find out. I especially want to encourage the "Twist".
How hardy are these weeping redbuds in the Rutland, Ma. area (zone 5)? Up high, very windy area?
anne
Good question, Anne, and I have no answer. The one pictured above was in Zone 6a or b, I forget. I have since moved to a colder zone (now listed under my name) but the tree wasn't mine.
I did plant a weeping river birch this year, and I'm training the leader to be higher before it weeps. I'm pretty cold up in the mountains, colder than most of my area.
