Does anyone know if i can save the pollen

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

on these premature buds? I reached up to my best brug to snap off a scuzzy leaf and the entire Y snapped off! It has 10 big buds on it and many little ones.

Do you think if I keep it in water it may let the buds mature enough to harvest the pollen? I have cut off all the big leaves already.

I could kick myself hard!

My poor tree is now so lopsided.

And then I knocked off my first, newly open RK of the season!

Wow, Kell. Was you running a demolition derby? Maybe Shirley or Monika can tell you if the pollen will be viable.

Kell, you can send me that Y and I'll watch it for you. LOL

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Place the Y in water. Some of the buds will continue to grow and bloom. If the texture of the stem is still too green, you should place a clear plastic bag over it to prevent it from wilting. It needs a shady place.

Monika, could you elaborate on the "place a clear plastic bag over it"?
over the stem? over the entire branch?
thanks

Kell, this wasn't "THE" brug was it?? Please say it wasn't!

Oh, Kell, you must really be crowded. I know you were sick.
Are you telling which one it was?????

No Susie, the piece that snapped off was bigger than the entire red brug. This was the BF X Rosamond cross from you. I just loved my first and only bloom from her. She is a beauty, huge and stately. I am hoping she will be darker this time.

Linda I am still so mad at myself!

Thanks Monika, I took off all the huge leaves and she is not wilting yet!

She has a nice shape. Looks like a HUGE flower too.

So far, I've loved every seedling that Kell has posted pictures of. Gosh darn.....I need bloom so bad. Maybe next week.

Brugie, I saw your "field of dreams" on another thread. Hope you get lots of beauties.

Kell, that one is gorgeous too. Do you ever grow an ordinary one? Linda

During the rain, I had a large branch with any number of Ys on it, and it wilted/withered and I didn't know anything to do but cut it out. I stuck it in a bucket in the shade and 4 or so of the buds are about to bloom. I don't have a clue what the pollen is going to be like. Good luck, I don't think you will have a problem...

Look on the bright side. That branch probably had a weak spot and was about to snap anyway. You were just the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Since you were on the scene you were able to rescue the branch and get it into water where it can mature some of the flowers and root. If it had broken off on its own during a windstorm it might have gone unnoticed until it had wilted too much to be rescued.

So true Tom!
