I've got a really dumb question....

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Since I'm new to the Brugs thread, I'm kinda confused. (what's new!) What is the difference between a Brugmansia and a Datura? I noticed the reference made in another post to them being separate plants, but I guess it shows how much I know because I thought they were one in the same.

Can someone please clue me in!! Thanks!

Not a dumb question at all, they were in the same family a few years back, since then they have been seperated.
The Angel trumpets ( Brugs) hang down as if from Heaven.
Datura, Devils trumets,Thorn apple, the blooms point up.

Remember that once in a while, you will see a brug that will point up more than down too, but it doesn't happen often. Kell has one posted right now. Also, brug blooms will last several days and datura are generally a one day bloom at most. Brugs probably require more care than dats, but cuttings from brugs take a lot easier than datura cuttings. Datura are considered an annual and brugmansia are considered tropical, I believe. Both are pretty but the variety is endless with brugs. JMHO.

Gardengirl1204, odd that you should have asked that question. it has been answered very well above. What is odd that before I got on DG I was reading a message from my daughter in VA. Sat. at farmers market she bought a Datura-Brug , but the person had lost the tag. So Cheryl's question was the same as yours. I answered in same vein as Root and Brugie did. Welcome and hope to see you often. Donna aka rutholive

GardenGirl....ask all the questions you want. There are so many people with such helpful information and there is no such thing as a dumb question. We all had to start learning somewhere. Be sure and visit us often.

Other differences - brugmansia (generally) grow much larger than datura and can become woody shrubs/small trees. As Brugie mentioned, dats are usually considered annuals or short-lived perennials at best but brugs live a lot longer. A big difference is that some daturas have purple flowers but there are no purple brugs. And daturas don't have the pink or orange tones seen in brugs.
