I didn't know there were 7 different Black Magics. I knew there was one that sent out runners and one that makes pups close to the stem.

Actually there are 13. I am so new to this that when I said "black magic" I got too many replies. Some are plants, but I stillcan't find any info on mine. Here is a picture..they have grown alot since the last time I took a picture!! They are quick growers.. Liz

Where did you read that there are thirteen kinds of Black Magic EE's? I'd be interested in finding more black ones. Thanks. When I do a search for Black Magic EE's, I only find one kind.

I am thinking the search pulled 13 hits? I know there is also a calla by that name.

I put "Elephant Ears" on this site and got 13.. I don't doubt they are BM, I just wanted to know all I could. If anybody can give info. on soil, weather, watering, etc. please let me know. I am thinking my soil is O.K. because they are growing so big, so fast. Here is another picture of them. Tey are growing FAST!!

I hit it in in quotes like above and got 293 hits. I had tried to paste it earlier but it did not work. They like to be moist. I pot them in gravel and put them in the pond. Try this link. http://www.santarosagardens.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=488

Thank you badseed!! I can't believe they cost so much. I got 17 bulbs and planted them all over(mind you--I had no idea what they were at that time) They grow big. ///i see now why my neighbors comment about them. Thanks for the help. I guess I better water more!LOL Liz

LOL I knew you'd get it. ;) Aren't they cool?!

My sister n law gave me some more EE last night. I planted them in a pot. I'm hoping I can keep these inside. I'll take a picture and maybe some will help me ID what kind they are. I can remember being a kid walking home from school and I'd spit on every one I saw because it just rolled off. I haven't tried that in over 20 yrs. Did anyone else ever try that??

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL You want us to admit to spitting?? LOL I remember the first time I tried to give them a foliar feed and laughed myself silly because it would not stick to the leaves. I water and feed the dirt now. ;)

There are currently only 3 kinds of Colocasia Black Magic.

Black Magic, Black Runner, and a new un-named one with a surreal brighter black color.

Brighter black !?! Never thought I would say something like that.

Statisticly speaking (and by your photo) you are most likely to end up with regular Black Magic because the latter two are new hybrids.

I just go the Black Runner. I've had the regular kind for a while. I love their leaves.

Didn't see this till this morning. My poor computer at home is not doing good. I've had it in the shop and it's going to have to go back for more work.
I'll take a picture this evening and post it when I get to work tomorrow.

Thank you everyone.. I love they are getting so big. Now I know what they are when people ask me!! LOL Liz

When I first saw the Black Magic that puts out runners (which people have decided to call Black Runner in the past year or two), I thought I saw a slight difference in the leaves, but you really had to squint. Now Plant Delights is selling it as Black Ruffles. I think the ruffled aspect depends on the temperature when the picture is taken.

Another black Colocasia is C. multiflora "Midnight." It used to be on the NCSU site in Alan Galloway's collection, but there's a password login on that site now.

Here's a little pic from google's cache.
