I have just planted cannas and purple fountain grass in a very large pot. I am zone 5, so I know they will not over winter outside. Is is possible to take the pot into a heated garage over the winter, and if so what sort of care should I give it? Any advice would be so helpful. Dendra
overwintering in a pot
Well, I know the cannas would live- the fountain grass I'm not sure of. I killed mine.
I'm in Z5. I dig up my callas, sprinkle them with bulb dust & store them in my mother's basement. (cool & dry) The pot's to big for me to drag over there. (she lives next door to me) The cannas are in smaller pots. I bring them -pots & all-to over winter in her basement as well.
If it's a mild winter, maybe they'd survive outdoors in their pots. If it's a winter like the last one, we had some severe deep freezes, they may not make it.
Dendra, here in Wisconsin...where we've had a very cold wet spring, I'll just be happy if the rest of my cannas LIVE through the summer! :-)
I'm relatively new to container gardening myself and have several cannas planted in a large tub so I'm interested in hearing answers to your question, also.

The purple fountain grass is very tender... I think it's listed as a zone 10?? You might want to take a little piece in the house for the winter to keep it going.
Sorry so long for getting back, thanks for your suggestions. Much appreaciated.
I have had some luck with things that overwintered in my garden quite by accident! Some asparagus fern, spike and mums all came back with no care at all? I just brought them into the garage and in the spring started watering them again, but off all the dead stuff and they came back -- some come back with a bang, others are not as good the second time around. It's fun when they surprise you like that!
Thanks for the info, YulOrdGarden! We'll see what kind of surprises we get here.
