"Strange" growth on my Colocasia...

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I have all sorts of Aroids and they are all growing like monsters. I noticed one of the Black Magic's sending out these things...what's up???

that's a baby.

Yep....it sure is! But mine are never that long! I think mine are only about 3 or 4 inches long and then set roots! That looks really cool!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Yep.put another pot there and stick them in,they will root.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

You can either wind it around inside moms pot, or put another pot beside it. It is looking for a good spot for a baby. That is how ee's multiply.

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

That's what I surmised, but usually in my experience they send up babies next to them. So in other words, if this were planted in the ground, it would have been underground and a new plant would pop up a few feet away from Mom? Mother Nature is so interesting!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Mine ran above ground last year,Violet Stemmed Colocasia.some runners were 6ft.

My calocasias run above ground. Here is a pic of one I just pulled off. It is over 6 feet long and there is another 2 feet or so on the ground where it broke off.

Well Rylaff, will you plant this horizontally around the ground? And where will the babies sprout? How deep if you plant to plant it?

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Dale, I pull these up all the time to toss them. I love elephant ears, but they are somewhat invasive. If I were going to let them grow, I would have left the sucker attached to the mother plant until the ear was established. That particular sucker had three different shoots that would have become a plant. I am constantly pulling these things out of my yard. I like some , but not a billion of them .

If you want to start more plants from the runners, cut it free from the mother plant then place it on a layer of soil in a large tray or flat pot and cover with potting soil. New babies will sprout from each node on the stem. I've also cut mine into pieces, making sure each piece has a node and they will sprout new plants that way.

This is still strange to me. Usually they just fill up the pot with babies not send these runners out over the side of the pot. Calla...how are you? Long time no hear. The Abutillons you sent me are doing great!

not all colocasia send out "stolons" some bulb. like c. rubard. c. ruffles. etc.

There are clumping Black Magics and running Black Magics, which some people have started calling Black Runner. Even clumping Black Magics will send out above-ground stolons when they are root bound or really large. Is it possible that you got this one from a different source than your others and that it is the running kind?

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I think I did get them from different sources. I noticed one of his "brothers" doing the same thing. Also these that are "running" are in pots, not the earth...could that have anything to do with it?

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

I tend to think that rootbound plants would be more likely to put up runners, but my experience doesn't support that. As a rule, whether in pots or in the ground, clumpers clump and runners run.

All mine are clumpers, and, since I compulsively collect everything I don't have, I would be interested in some of your runners. Would you be interested in other taros?

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

Planter Rik...sure depending on which ones. I am fairly innodated, but like you always like a different one. I'll have to do some research on how to get you a growing tuber/runner. I have removed those runners and gotten rid of them but I believe more are growing.
