Question about Pollen

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Since all but one of my Brugs are small, I don't know if I will have more than one thing blooming at a time. I'm trying to be confident that something will bloom this summer. ;-)

I have a large Charles Grimaldi that I purchasesd with flowers on it. I had to insure that I would be able to smell at least one Brug this summer.

Can I save some pollen from it so that I can try pollinating another blossom when they come? How would I store it?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sure. Pull the anthers with the pollen on them when it looks fluffy and let them sit on a paper plate or, I use custard cups, anything that will hold them and not get tipped over. Let them sit exposed to the air in a dark place for at least a couple of days. I usually bag mine into those little zip lock bags for jewelry, etc., marked with the name and date, and store inside another zip lock bag in the fridge.

Thanks Shirley.

I'll stick them in the Pantry for a couple of days ......... I hope no one thinks they are a "treat".

They don't look that good!! LOL!

You're probably right.

But you don't know my family. I've got 3 son's and a husband that eat just about anything.

2 of the "boys" are out of the house, but they sneak back every once in a while and raid my pantry.

LOL! They sure wouldn't get their bellies full on pollen anthers. Hope it will work well for you.

How long do you think pollen is good for in the fridge?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think it was Kyle that said he has kept it for two years in the fridge or freezer. Can't remember which. I don't freeze mine anymore. Just refrigerate it because I can get fresh pollen each year.
