I purchased a Datura today that was marked "Curly Locks".
I can't find anything with a google search. Has anyone heard of it? It doesn't have any buds or blooms, so I can't tell you much more than that.
When I saw it, I thought I had a spot where I could squeeze it in, but when I got home ..... well it's not going to fit. Are Daturas good canditates for growing in pots?
Here's a picture ..... it shows the leaves at least.
Has anyone heard of a Curly Locks Datura?
I have never grown one in a pot, this is cool,I will be waiting to see pics of it blooming! Congrats!
Thanks Rootdoctor,
I'm still working on finding it a place in the ground .... those peppers aren't doing much ...............
I'll ponder this a bit longer and see what I can do.
I wonder what I have here, can't wait until it blooms so I can see. It may be nothing unusual, but you never know.
Tree_Climber, never heard of Curly Locks but sure has great foliage. Hope you get an interesting bloom and find a spot to plant it. Donna
Maybe you got really lucky there. That looks like x Flava foilage.I have not seen all the Dats but on the ones I have seen the leaves don't look like that one.
Liz has a pic of her x Flava on this forum and there is a picture of mine on the BGI forum. The leave on both sure look like those.
Tree Climber, you sound just like me! Not an inch to fit in anything more. No dirt exposed!! And now even where I have pots, I have not an inch!
This looks so healthy, I can't wait to see what you got!!
Wow TC, can't wait to see the bloom of this one.
i have daturas in pots and they are doing great. i keep it dead headed and they never stop blooming and they are staying compact not spralling.
pretty pretty can't wait to see it bloom.
JT ,
that was my first reaction also but the only sangs I've seen had very fuzzy leaves .... but of course I've only seen a few. You can see on Flava's leaves how velvety they look.
This is getting exciting !!!!
Would be neat if T_C's plant was a brug with all the y'ing going on ?
Keep us posted Tree_Climber =)
TreeClimber, it looks like the leaves of Datura Stramonium var. Tatula, an annual. It will grow very well in a container. In fact, it is good to crowd the roots so that the plant will grow more compact. These Daturas have a tendency to get long and lanky if their roots aren't restricted somewhat. It sounds like someone made up the name "Curly Locks," perhaps because the blooms unfurl in a curly-type manner. This annual self-seeds easily so collect seeds after the pod dries and cracks open slightly.
Thanks Everybody,
Now that you have given me somthing to go on, I have done a little more searching here at DG.
I still don't have an answer, but ...
Clare,
From the pictures I looked at, it looks to me like the Tatula is more bushy and has darker leaves and the stems appear to be purple. Is that a accurate description? It's sometimes hard to tell from photography.
Mine has a very sturdy main stem that is basically the same light green as the leaves, and isn't bushing out at all, at least at this point.
Gone2seed,
It took me a while to figure out what a x flava was ..... this is my first year with Brugs and Dats. I'm learning. I couldn't find a picture of an entire plant, but did see some leaves. The pictures I found did have fuzzy leaves, and mine are definately smooth.
I may have to take a trip back to the greenhouse where I purchased this, and see if they can tell me more. It's a local place that also does wholesale, but it's the kind of place that just may know a lot about the things they sell.
Kell,
I have to confess ..... we probably are 2 peas in a pod. I didn't want to admit it, but when I came home with this plant, I also came home with 7 other's (different things). I knew I had the beds full and I was just going to look..... I fit them in though.
I did find a spot for this plant too, so it's in the ground. It's actually a pretty good spot that I just had to weed out a bit. It's in a raised bed with full sun and good drainage.... should do well no matter what it is.
I'll keep this thread posted with updates.
You know what one of my gardening friends calls that kind of gardening? Where you buy a plant and come home with no idea where you are going to put it, and you have to search around for a place to squeeze it into your beds? He calls that "shoehorn gardening"
Well, I have to admit. I do a lot of shoehorn gardening. LOL
Shoehorn Gardening .................. describes it perfectly.
LOL Mary...great term and I think I definately resemble that remark!
Just took another look at my plant .... it has buds. They look like Dat buds to me straight up and kinda like an Okra bud.
It's raining out so I'll post a picture later.
Yes I did run out in the rain to take a look.............. if it's true that a watched pot never boils, I'm in trouble.
Hi Tree_Climber, there are several different variations of Datura Stramonium and Datura Stramonium var. tatula. The flower color varies also from white to lavender to white with a purple center. How bushy it becomes will depend upon how restricted the roots are and how or if the plant is pruned or pinched. I'm sure you have a Datura Stramonium var. Tatula. You will know for sure when you see the flower bloom. Here's a link: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/48970/index.html
Also, check out this link: http://davesgarden.com/t/437055/
Thanks Clare,
The pictures in the Plants Database look different to me than what I have, but when I clicked on the other link at DG, it looked like a twin to mine.
I'm curious as to why the Nursery would give it a name other than it's correct name. Seems like they wouldn't just name something randomly.
I get the impression that I want to deadhead this unless I want it to seed all over the place. Or maybe that won't happen in my zone 5.
It will happen. I couldn't keep up with deadheading last year and ended up pulling the plant out. LOL!
Thanks Shirley for letting me know from personal experience that it reseeds in zone 5.
I usually love things that do that, but I'm not sure I want this to. I had to weed out about a thousand tomato seedlings from the bed when I planted this. They're easy to pull though, so I shouldn't complain, it could have been thistles.
Tree_Climber, you are right that the nursery shouldn't have just made up a name like that. I've never heard of that name before. I have a nursery near me in which half the things are labeled wrong and the other half have no tags at all. I don't buy anything these days unless I know what it is, what it needs, and how big it grows. I'm a renter and bought way too many trees before I knew they were trees! Anyway, this Datura has a lovely fragrance and is worth keeping just for the fragrance. You can surely snap the pod off after each bloom, but it is an annual so just be sure to let a pod or two grow and develop for you and your friends.
Clare,
Thanks again for all your help.
I'm really surprised that this particular Nursery would just assign a name to a plant. I'm going to ask about it when I go back ............ if I dare go back, I really have to stop buying plants.
I can't wait to see the blooms and smell the scent. I'll save some seed for sure.
Ok, guys, I couldn't stand it until I talked to the folks at the Nursery. They weren't open yesterday, or I would have been there on the 4th.
I actually spoke to the owner today. He didn't even know what a Datura was ........... but he got on his walkie talkie and we had a conversation with one of his employees.
He has two employees that he "sets loose" with seed catalogs and his credit card ....
I was told that they would never just give something a name.
It was purchased seed from a catalog but unfortunately they couldn't remember which catalog. (Now how are they going to reorder if it sells good? Maybe they collect seed, but I'll bet it's written down somewhere.) The Owner said his employees keep excellent records of what they purchase and how they do. They even grow the new things in their own gardens and under different conditions to see how they fare.
Anyways ............... it's suppose to be a double yellow.
Several of my buds fell off after I transplanted it, but a few are still there. I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait. I'll post a picture when it blooms.
Tree_Climber,
Good for you for going back! It always amazes me how much Nurserymen don't know. You would think, being in the business, they would know the names of most things!
Double/triple yellow is really nice, and as you said, your stem is green so that does make more sense. It is probably Datura Metel var. Chlorantha.
Here's mine:
Clare,
That's a beauty! Thanks for sharing your picture with me. I can see where someone would name it "Curly Locks" now.
You must grow a lot of Daturas, you certainly are knowledgable.
I'll post a picture of mine when it blooms, I hope it's as beautiful as yours.
Clare, do you know which one of the double/triple yellow datura has the bright and shiny green leaves. It was the first one I ever had, but it bloomed too late to get seeds. I'd love to grow it again. Would love to try a few seeds of your yellow if you have extra this fall.
Sure, Shirley. I have extra seeds now if you want to send me a SASE. They are seeds that I collected from last summer, but I'm sure they are still good. I only know of the one Datura Metel double/triple yellow, and I'm not aware of one that has shiny leaves. Hmmm...
Clare,
The purple one is beautiful too. Now you know I'll just have to get that one too .............. there's no hope for me, I am so easily addicted.
Tree_Climber, good thread. Am looking forward to your photo when your datura blooms. Still no sign of buds on any of mine. Donna
Clare I don't want to start any until next spring. It's too late for this year. One day I'll get the SASE in the mail with a note so you will have it later on.
Donna,
I hope you have buds soon. I'll be sure to post a picture of my "found treasure" when it blooms.
Tree_Climber, I'll probably have some extra seeds of my purple ones by the end of the summer if you want to do a SASE. I can send you some of my other Datura seeds also.
Sure, Shirley, any time is fine.
Clare,
You've got mail.
Thanks Again.
Got it! You're welcome:-)
I agree with you Root, it doesn't look any different from the pictures I've seen posted here at DG.
