Worth a try Julie. :-)
Lisa and Julie, I had a hard time rooting P. Lady Margaret. I was mostly trying to root cuttings in a jar of water. It wasn't until I switched to Oasis Cubes that I was able to successfully root cuttings. I used a rooting hormone and a humidity dome also. Since then, I root all the hard-to-root plants and vines that way.
Thanks crimsontsavo...I've got one going as I type.
And Clare!! I'm SO glad you mentioned the oasis cubes! And here I thought I'd discovered something NEW and was afraid to mention it. Only this morning I decided to try some cuttings from a euonymous and since I am having trouble keeping enough water in some of my jars...AND I just happened to have a chunk of oasis laying around in my shed, I figured "What the heck?" I cut off a couple of cubes, cut them in half, hormoned the cuttings, and stuck them between the oasis. (There's a method in my madness...I stuck the cubes back together with toothpicks so I could "peek!"
:-D)
It's really been great finding DG and all the great people who have shared their knowledge. I just wish *I'd* been the one to "discover" the oasis thingy. LOL
Oh...and since I wrote the last time I went out and took some pictures of ROOTS!!! :-) (I'm SO proud of myself!)
~julie~
LOL, Julie! Actually, the credit goes to JD for discovering Oasis Cubes. I sent him a bunch of Passiflora cuttings, and he sent me the Oasis cubes and some rooting hormone in return. So JD actually discovered them:-) They work great!
By the way, Euonymus should root easily for you. I think I've rooted that in water before without any problems. Congratulations on your roots!
Thanks for the congrats, Clare...they are appreciated. I know my success is nothing new to y'all, but it sure opens doors for me. And it's a GOOD thing I'm retired! :-D Now I can spend ALL my time getting ROOTS! LOL
I'm glad I *didn't* read JD's intro to oasis...makes me feel good to figure something out. It's even better knowing that someone else already tried it and it WORKS. :-)
Sorry, Tropicman...sometimes I just forget NOT to hijack someone else's thread. I'll try to contain myself a little more.
~julie~
LOL, Julie! Don is very sweet and doesn't mind if we talk all night on his thread, do you Don? We love to talk about roots!
No I love to read what everyones up too!!
Well I have 4 cuttings yellow trumphet vine,1 lady margret
2 coccinea, and 2 vitifolia and 2 red shrimp plants, will see in about 4 weeks how there doing.I'm going with 3 inches or less on the cuttings,I heard the smaller the better,I'm hoping so.
Don, how are you rooting them? Mine did okay at around six to eight inches, but I had them in a humidity dome, which helped them to get moisture enough to keep their leaves. Are you doing the jar of water inside the tub of water?
Okay- can you root these like other Passifloras?
I put mine in my pond in a protected spot. They rooted.
No I took 32 oz,plastic glasses,1/4 sand in very bottom,1/4 expert potting soil on top of sand,1/4 vermiculite on top of that and 1/4 perilite on top of everything, which filled plastic glass halfful, then rooting powder on cutting, with a dome lid,
My idea is if it roots it shouldn't have any trouble reaching the potting soil and sand, and if it does,I'll have good strong roots by then. Its been over 24 hours and they still look great,my theory the smaller the cutting the faster to root. These were all the very top tips of the vine I used for cuttings, they might just be to tender for rooting, but my understanding is thats where all the growth hormones are at,will just have to wait to see.
Crimsontsavo, nicely done! My fish would eat mine if I put them in the pond!
Very interesting, Don. I like it! Let us know how they do.
Hehe- thats why i said protected spot! LOL- I put it behind pots they couldnt get to. Those lil buggers would eat me if they could!
LOL!
It's gorgeous! I wonder what species they used to breed this one?
Tropicman, I just read your rooting passiflora 2.0 thread and can't wait to try it! Why didn't you root these cuttings that way though?
I think that was Jeff Davis, but I like to try something different
I love experimenting!
TM---
How can I cross mine? Just "paint" them with each others pollen?
I've never tried crossing plants- but it sounds like so much fun!
That will do it,if you get lucky!!!
Good Luck!
