Tortoises in pond.. questions

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

After seeing my blakish water in my pond, some people opine that small tortoises if left there in the pond will keep the water and the pond clean. I have heard that some people use this creature in wells to maintain cleanliness of water. But I have not heard of anyone keeping them in ponds. My other friend here says that it is not auspicious to keep tortoises at home (leave alone the pond). Another friend says that keeping tortoises at homes can drain out wealth whereas if it is kept in a well, it is the opposite result (according to Feng Shui). Now my cousin who is travling on a job had called me from a nearby town that there was a small tortoise that someone is willing to part with. I have asked him to bring it in any case and see what best I can do with it. In the meantime, I turn to my friends here on DG for any suggestions and information. If things don't work out my way, I can hand it over to the zoo here so that the animal can lead its own life.

Tortoises can not live in water. They will drown. Tortoises are land turtles. Only terripen (turtles) can live in water. Turtles will eat your plants and tear up everything. Unless you have a very large pond I would not suggest you put a turtle in it. They also make lots of waste and will eat your fish.

Turtles and tortoises are large animals that produce much poo-too much for a small pond. Do not add them to your pond, that will make it dirtier, not cleaner.

My cousin who had called me about this animal yesterday showed up this morning sans the tortoise. Much to my relief!! The tortoise stays where it is and it did not make the journey. In the meantime, I had seen the response from Betty. I will drop the thought of having a tortoise or a turtle here. I even searched about Feng Shui.

for anyone who is wondering, according to my local Feng Shui expert, the tortoise thing is NOT true Feng Shui but is superstition. He recommends The Idiots Guide to Feng Shui (NOT the Dummy's Guide) if you're curious about Feng Shui. Online, try http://www.qi-whiz.com/ - its really a colorful, not to say ugly, site, but the info is good. Another good site he recommends is http://www.purefengshui.com.au which has a full course on Feng Shui (no charge.) Avoid Lilian Too - she's really trendy and looking to sell to the American market, not educate about traditional Feng Shui.

I don't know anything about Feng Shui but I do know that a tortoise is a land animial and WILL DROWN if put in water over its shell.

So now we're all straight on the care and feng shui of tortoises! Don't drown them, and don't worry about the feng shui. :)

Isn't Dave's a great place?

I'm in agreement with that, Killer. A great place.
