I have another one this year! So excited, they are beautiful!
Nana bloom
weeds, How do you get your nanas to bloom? I have several, fertilize , water , but no blooms! Melba
Melba, I don't do anything to them....guess that just happens to be a fertile one! None of my others have ever bloomed.
Looking good, Weeds!!
I'm crying here......
Thanks Nat! I saw all the pics of the roundup at your house and it sure looked like fun! Wish I coulda been there.
CC, I will save you a baby next spring if you want it....I just can't stand to see a grown woman cry! or sniff! The babies are huge already this year so is too late I think.
How pretty!!! There's some neener trees at the old zoo on 231 going to cottondale that are just growing "wild"...maybe we could pop in there and ask about them sometime?
You bet Crim!
Just send me one with a bloom...LOL LOL LOL LOL
Then I can stop crying...
I have some that are HUGE
and no blooms....
my DH thinks its funny...
keeps asking me where are the nanas for his cereal
Theres one that is going to have to lie down in the GH this winter.......its leaves were bent and breaking this past winter
13 foot ceiling not tall enough for it
CC, you are too funny! I guess I could wrap it in in those concrete sewer pipes, eh? Or better yet, I will cut off the bloom and send and with the magic of duct tape, viola....yours will have a bloom!
edited to correct my fumble fingered typing

duct tape..LOL...I saw the Nana bloom yesterday..it is awsome! I asked Bill about a baby..he says yes!! (banana NOT people)
Ok, I will find you one!
Thank you.
Our Bananas bloomed last year, and we got a few to eat. They have doubled their size already this year (15 feet and growing) and we expect to have more. We were told by a man that grows many nearby that the answer is enough lawn fertilizer, (just high Nitrogen, not weed killer) to burn the grass around them, plus never let them dry. So far it seems to be working. This same plant, (we dug up part of it) when we lived in Houston produced 6 to 8 stalks a year. They were delicious. It is a shame that all the stalks that bloom die. At least they have pups.

I got to see this in person the other day. Weeds, you are Da' Bomb!! Your yard is amazing and I still wish I had more time than I did. I really needed an entire day instead of just an hour or two. That nana was so cool! It was the first banana bloom Ive ever seen in person, way too cool.
I need that clump
I think I'm going to fertilize the heck out of it
if it dies Its one less plant for the GH
If it blooms...
there will be a bottle of champagne for me and a fertilizer cocktail for the nana....
Hey Draven...they are beautiful eh?
Trois, that is one big clump and I think you should send CC some before she does something BAD.
Good idea!!

Is this bloom earlier than last years Weeds?
The nana growers down here fertilize them heavily, even use ammonium sulfate sometimes(pure nitrogen 15-0-0). I fertilized mine, you can almost watch them grow. No blooms yet, but I see bananas with fruit all over the place.
They have to have quite a long period of no cold weather to bloom don't they?
18 months is normal as long as the main trunk doesn't freeze.
Lily, bloomed earlier this year and my nanas froze and were cut back both winters.
Ouch! I keep hoping to see you with yellow nanners...I know you do to! ;)
They should ripen this year, no cold weather for a few months yet so they have time and coming along nicely.
Weeds, crossing my fingers for you. I think you have to cut the stalk when they are ready, so they will turn yellow. That's what they do here.
Thanks Cala, now find our for me how do I know when they are ready??? Will they let me know?
Weeds, my nana bloomed this year too. Not the Chinese yellow that just sits there, the big green ones. Only thing, and this is just legend, the only time I get blooms on nanas, we have a hurricane. They are ripe when all the petals fall off and nanas are hanging, only they will still be realllllll green. We put them inside and when they turn a little yellow, we eat, but they are not so good. The flavor is there, but they are little and the peel is thick, but still it is fun to have them. Now if only the chinese thing would do something.......
Hey Roz! Haven't heard a peep from you in awhile, how you doing???
Same for my Chinese, hasn't done a thing, hasn't had a baby but it is here to stay.
Thanks for the info on the nanas getting ripe and please mother nature, ignore Roz's bloom. Don't need no hurricane!
Just recently got a velutina that is supposed to make hot pink nanas, not edible, but different, and a red nana that is supposed to make a red bloom, strictly ornamental. I sure hope I live long enough to see it bloom along with the chinese yellow.
Roz, I have a veluntina. It hasn't bloomed yet, but it's over a year old. I'll keep an eye on it and post the pic when it does!
