Hi!
I have an Amorphophallus paeoniifolius, voodoo plant/voodoo lilly. It bloomed this year (as it has done a few times in the past), but no seeds. Does anyone know how to get seeds on this plant?
Do you need more than one bloom to make seeds?
Are there male and female blooms?
If there are male and female blooms, if you take a baby off the crom, will that baby produce the same bloom as the main plant?
I know they get seeds on them because I saw them on a web site showing the seeds, I just don't know if it takes more than one flower to get the seeds.
Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks!!
Onalee

Oh my gosh, that is beautiful. Don't know about the seeds I just know what I like and I sure like that.
Onalee...
The thing we call the "flower" on Amorphophallus, is actually called a "spathe". On the inside lower part of the stalk, you will find the true flowers. If you look there (you will probably want to hold your breath), you will find two areas which look different. One has male and the other female flowers.
To make things worse, as I understand it, the male and female flowers are not ripe at the same time. Also, unfortunately, the male flowers ripen after the female flowers.
So, basically, you would need two or more Amorphophallus flowering at the same time to pollinate this year. I've heard you can collect and freeze the pollen from the male flowers and then use it to fertilze the next time it or another flowers.
Kind of tricky stuff...

Thank you so much for the info! At least I know now not to worry about trying to get seeds, I'll just get the babies off of it that come up.
Thanks, again!!
