Protea question

Pernis RT, Netherlands(Zone 8a)

Hi,
I bought Protea seed from a South African seed company and accoording to their listing the Protea's I bought can grow in zone 8 (I live in te Netherlands). But my gardening book tells me that they're hardy from zone 9 and upwards.
Has anyone here grown these plants succesfully outside in zone 8?
I would love to hear from you!

Hi Agnes,

Depends what type of Protea you have; some are just about hardy in Zone 8 if you can give them lots of protection in Winter. Personally I would go with the book advice. The UK and Netherlands are similar climatically except, I think sometimes you get much colder winters than we do.

I have wanted to try these for awhile, but the books make it sound hopeless in zone 7.

Hi Eltel,
I think our wether is almost the same, even the winters.
Since my husband is from England BBC news is staple food here every night and whatever your wheter forecast is we'll almost always can expect that same wether a day later.
This with the exception ofcourse of the south coast of England.
