White Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica alba)

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Great photo Happenstance. Does this bloom the first year from seed or should I buy it as a plant? I notice it is stated as being hardy to zone 4 so doubt it would survive our winter. Sure would like to give it a shot though......Linda

Now that I look at the image I think it might be a little misleading. The inflorescence is indeed White Clary Sage, but the gray foliage in the background is a Plectranthus (Silver spurflower, also in the PDB). Please click on the link to the PDB for White Clary Sage above to see the other images showing the leaves to this plant.

This is one of those "large leaved" Salvias that get leaves that are usually textured/fuzzy and run 12"-24" in size. This plant did not bloom the first year and to maintain it as a perennial the flower stalks should be cut back as they begin to fade. It is evergreen here in 9b/10a/10b/Northern California Sunset Zone 17 ....the new USDA zone map has me confused but I still live in the same place. :-)

Someone wrote the helpdesk that they thought the flowers were a little too lavender-colored to be S. sclarea var. turkestanica f. alba, especially compared to this picture: http://seeds.thompson-morgan.com/uk/en/product/3277/1?SA=1303

Whatcha think? Could it have been mislabled, and should be moved to S. sclarea var. turkestanica?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Looks like this one is really Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica not alba. (note its color)
