I gave my Brugs a Hair Cut tonight......

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

You saw the posts, where the leaves looked possibly chemical burned?

Well, I took sterile scissors and cut them off.

They aren't as bushy as before, but gotta tell ya - look much better than they did with those awful leaves.

Is that ok? Is there a certain way I should go about cutting off leaves? I've never seen posts about this, so I just went by instinct and got rid of them.

Thanks for the help if there is any! :)

Oh one more thing, tonight was my night to feed them, but I put it off and just watered them, since I felt I'd done enough to them for one day.

Am I a good mother or am I going to kill them? I do worry about them and just don't know ANYTHING about them as this is my first year plus I started from seeds, and they are quite tall and I feel a little helpless and overwhelmed.

I am a doater - if that helps.

Tape them all back on! It's the only way to fix the problem. LOL

It won't hurt the plant. Don't worry. You just can't kill these plants.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Tape them back on.........that'll keep you busy for a day or two. Funny.

They should be fine, brugs are very easy to grow, once you get the hang of it. Good luck.

Rather than cut with scissors or shears (it would take me forever to get them all done), I snap the leaves off with my hand. That way nothing touches the plant that's been in contact with another plant. And, the part of the plant my hand touches is discarded, so its a very safe way to de-leaf them without risking contamination.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I do the same thing, Gretchen. Although I had to read your post twice. I read it too fast the first time and thought it said something about your hand being discarded, lol.

Me too Mary! Glad you still have your hand, Gretchen! :~)

Glad to hear I'm not the only one doing it this way! And, yes I think I'll keep my hand, given the choice LOL!

Funny - I removed the first two leaves with my hands, "pinching" them off, then ran to get my scissors, thinking a precise cut would be less stressful.

Thanks for the words of wisdom guys or gals! I'll be a bonified brug lunatic like the rest of you in no time flat as I learn all these tricks and facts! :)

Karrie: don't pinch them with your fingers unless you disinfect your fingers or change gloves in-between plants. Theoretically the juice from the plant on your fingers could come in contact with the next plant you touch... Just a word of friendly advice. When I snap them off, its just a quick, upward pull and snap of the leaf stem. It creates a clean break where the stem and stalk join and then you discard the only part of the plant that you have touched... Hope that's helpful. Gretchen :)

Thanks Gretchen!

Me forth, I snap the leaves off too!! But didn't realize I might be keeping other plants from becoming contaminated, duh, I've read that before but I just 'heard' it this time, if you know what I mean, ha!! I started snapping them off because I like the wound better than when they are cut...

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

hmmmm - I guess from now on I will "snap" them off. This was a good learning experience for me.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I prefer a cut,I cut about 1 1/2 from the stalk and let the plant drop the stump when it is ready,I have torn a few trying to yank leaves off.

Root, I've ripped a few (I'm green as grass), attempting to take leaves off, and, boy, do I hate that. I'm trying to snap more quickly, so that won't happen. I do like the 'wound' better, when they are snapped, but if you like cutting better, please tell me how you do it and I will give it a try - after all, you a pro and a mentor that I sincerely respect!!!!

LOL,Don;t make my head swell,I won't be able to get through my new sliders!!
I use Consan 20 it is a disinfectant,I take a tupperware bowl and lay my knives in it,I like to let them set 10 minutes before I use them again,so I use a few serrated knives when I m working and rotate them out.
If I remember,I will take a picture tomorrow.
Don't have me as a Mentor,I'm just a goofy guy from the Midwest that has a green thumb,I listen to Monika.
I do remember somewhere Tracey saying she snaps them up first.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I'm trying to visualize in my head exactly how I do it, but its just a quick, practiced motion that goes up then down and leaf stem makes a clean break. I believe that Root's way does look better -- I like to see the brug drop the stem naturally too, but I just don't have enough hours in my day to do it that way...wish I did :) Root -- don't sell yourself short! A lot of us really look up to you!!!
