Picked these today, 68 days from seed.
Straight Eight cucumbers
Very nice! I'm replanting mine since the original ones got overgrown in the greenhouse when planting was delayed 2 weeks because of cold weather, then when I did set them out they fried in the hot sun. So, back to square one. Enjoy some for me, ok?
Mary, I'll have a couple for you! I'm going to slice one up and make a cucumber sandwich with salt, pepper and mayonnaise, yummy.
Mine are doing great, just loaded with small cukes right now, time to start making pickles. :o)
Yummy!
I only grew the lemon apple cukes this year, and will probably start some more plants this week. (Terrible problem with cuke beetles here!)
Looking good, B_Red!
Shoe, no problems here with cuke beetles (so far). Biggest problem is with potato bugs, which I hand pick twice a day, and rabbits in my beans and sweet taters. I've really, really, really discourged six of them so far. ;o)
Oh well, I just won't have any beans in my rabbit stew!
When I first cleared this land (used ot be all woods) I had no cuke beetles. Enjoy it!
As for rabbits...a .22 or the like will help. A rabbit gum will also help. (You should make some NOW for this Fall/Winter, so they season well.) A good garlic spray will help deter the rabbits, for now, also. (They're loving my bush beans! But only for another day or so!)
Shoe, rabbit gum?
Local expression I reckon. A rabbit box/trap.
Gum...Used to mean folks made them outta gum trees (only thing worth allowing a gum tree to grow on your land!). Others say it's a rabbit "gun", cus the box trap has a trigger.
Either way, it's a home-made box with a trip door. I've got many a wild rabbit in them (and also a possum or two, but turn them loose!).
Here is "Flat Trish" in one, hiding!
Good idea, hadn't thought of that. What the best bait to use?
I don't use bait in them anymore. Used to put an apple piece in there but I would catch more possums than rabbits. (Once a possum goes in there you gotta smoke the traps to get their stink out. Then the smokey smell tends to also keep the rabbits from going in for a while.
I set them on rabbit runs if I'm putting on in the woods. If in the garden put it where they are eating. If you see where the rabbits have been eating a clover patch put it near there, it'll be the only cover nearby and they'll go right inside.
Gotta make em outta old wood, too. They will ignore new wood. The boards off the side of an oak barn work great!
How do the rabbits trip the trigger?
The trigger goes in from the top of the box and has a notch on it. The notch hooks to the top (edge of the hole). When the rabbit hits it, the trigger comes loose and the weight of the door causes the door to shut.
I just recently had to start some new ones from seed (pickling kind) because only 3 of my others survived, and the cold stunted them, and they aren't doing very well. Sure hope this hot weather we've been having get's them ALL going.
