I got these cuttings about 2 weeks ago and they are doing just great ! I put them all in a container of perilite....how long can they stay in the container together before I need to worry about their roots getting tangled together? Should I separate them now and pot them in potting soil? Or can I wait a bit?
This is the first time I tried perilite....they seem to really like it!!
How long before I need to pot up cuttings?
If they were mine and had roots at all, I'd pot them up.
Gosh, Margie, they look wonderful!!! I'm going to try some like that...
They look so clean and seem to like Perlite. Never tried them in that.
They do look great but putting them together like that could be trouble if one of them has SB. I am very careful never to share anything between brugs.
Thanks all...I will separate them in separate containers today! I didn't think, incase one had a disease...I had been concerned about the roots!
I saw the common container on the BGI instructions for starting cuttings.
OK...each cutting is now in its own 4" container with MG and supersoil..1/2 of each.
I was really surprised when I took them out of the perilite, they had almost no visible roots! Seemed really strange. Has anyone else ever experienced this...with green leaves forming?
I haven't Margie but I always started mine in dirt. I have trouble even when I stick them in water for more than a day or 2.
I am petrified of SB Margie, and I am a nurse so I am very careful about cross contamination. I do not even use the same clippers on 2 brugs without boiling them first. A few people had great trouble when they put cuttings from different brugs in one container. It can spread that way to brugs that usually are not susceptible to it.
Anyway, chances are they are all perfectly fine so do not lose sleep over it! They look beautiful!
I would not worry about putting that many cuttings in one container as long as they came off the same plant.Just don't mix cuttings off of different plants.
kell...I am a nurse too (retired now)...I guess I didn't realize that the SB thing was so prevalent to worry about. I will be more careful from now on.
The cuttings above came from different plants! So, I will have to not do that again, too!
Hopefully, I will be lucky this time!
i root mine in water so it is easy to tell when the roots form. yes, sometimes the leaves start growing before it has any roots. i have some thick cuttings that are doing this right now.
mmqc...thank you for responding and thank you for your e-mail about the almaden plant swap! Are you planning to go? I don't know if I will have things ready to swap this year.
Hi All! I'm a nurse also! But I'm a brug newbie, so what does SB stand for?
Thanks!
Yvonne
Yeah, if they were mine, I'd agree, I'd separate them now.
I think me, personally, would have planted them in separate pots to begin with, but I'm a newbie on brugs, so what do I know.
I would think that those roots don't need to intertangle, and now would be a good time to separate them, while you can.
YTRN, It stands for Stenglebrand, A Virus, it can be fatal to whole collections. It is being found in the US now,and we need to take extra measures to control it.
yes, i am planning on going to the almaden plant swap. i just moved and the new place is smaller so i need to clear some plants out to grow more brugs! :) haha. it will be fun to meet other gardeners in our area. especially for you, i think there will be more people from the almaden valley area.
They look wonderful Margie, oh so healthy-!! I see you have one green shoot, I thought they 'had' to be brown to root - and, silly me, I would have thought just the opposite...
Thanks Sherry...I don't know what color they were supposed to be...I just rooted the gift cuttings sent to me! They all are taking nicely, 11 different brugs...one I gave to my mom and promised one to my daughter...of ones I had dbles of!
