I received brugs from Datdog today and they're awesomely packaged and healthy. She even threw in some coleus. Oh, the excitement!
She sent me these brugs:
'Golden Lady'
http://plantsdatabase.com/go/3068/index.html
'Maya'
http://plantsdatabase.com/go/53828/index.html
'Halo Peach' and Calalily's 'Jeane Pasko x Jessie Noel'
...Anyone have pictures or links for these two?
There was also a rooted cutting of an unnamed mystery brug.
And a local friend gave me one which she thinks could be 'Pink Beauty', but she's not sure. Until I know otherwise, I'll call it Pink Beauty.
You're indoctrinating me...They're arriving
Look good healthy plant so use the stick to make brug straight up to make look better.
The Pink Beauty was looking droopy at the top even after being potted almost a week. When I tried pulling up the tip to take a picture, it broke off. :X
Good news, though: I cut it cleanly and it's now putting out new growth. Should I keep the side shoots from growing? Here's a shot of her today. I don't have today's mail in pots yet!
Tomorrow mom and I are visiting Rosiesplace in Plain City. They have a brug for me, along with some nice poop. ;D
Kim, it all looks great. Kristi is a great gal and so sharing. As for your Pink Beauty, I wouldn't trim anything until she is well established. She needs the leaves to gather the sun and grow well right now. Now for the poop..........that is something none of us ever get enough of. If I could climb over a fence, I'd be in the pasture next to us gathering the dried stuff every day.
Thanks, Brugie. I' going to stick today's brugs up in pots just slightly larger than gallon for the time being, just in case; it might be several days before Howie can help me any with hole-digging. My hands are still messed up and he's been doing so much around the house. I love that man!
Watch out Kimberley, it's addicting! LOL My Golden Lady will be blooming any day. Did you look them up in the PDB under brugs?
Oh GW!! They look great! YAY! You will love the addiction.
I tried finding 'Halo Peach' and Calalily's 'Jeane Pasko x Jessie Noel' in the PDB and at brugmansia.org, but couldn't find them. Brain squeeze, or are there really no entries?
YEAH!!! They got there. Halo Peach is a pretty peachy/pink color. Mine is about to open. I'll post a picture when it does. The Jeane Pasko X Jessie Noel are seeds from Calla. I grew them, and you can tell by their small size. They've yet to bloom. It will be a surprise when they do. Enjoy the plants. If you have any questions, just drop me a line.
Thanks ((Shirley))
Hip, hip hooray!!
Youre one of 'us' now, and there's no turning back!
It sounds like you really got some nice ones GW! I absolutely love my Golden Lady, did you see my thread a little while ago? http://davesgarden.com/t/436380/ from everyone's advice, I would keep that one in filtered shade. And as for Pink Beauty, (lucky girl) look at this http://davesgarden.com/t/434242/Pink+Beauty I just can't wait for mine to bloom, everyone says it's a great bloomer, even in the heat.
So happy for you :) We all can't wait to see your bloom pics!
Kim, I'm in 5a as you can see and my GL did wonderfully in full sun. Right now she is in full sun, in a 7 or 8 gallon pot and is mulched. She is doing great. Has several Y's and is budding. Vi is in a much warmer climate than we are and if we don't push them a little with the sun and fertilizer, we won't get much bloom. It never hurts if they get some shade from the hot afternoon sun, but I would definitely give her all morning sun and a little more if you can. Sorry Vi, I had to note the differences in our zones and temps. Always remember that what works for one might not work for another, so growing brugs is trial and error until you know what they can take. Maybe Kristi could tell you where she kept her GL. That would be what it is accustomed to. JMHO.
Oh, I don't want any errors! ;) I may follow in Jo's footsteps and become an Ex-brugkiller, huh?
I'm going to have to get some bigger pots. The way things are going, I doubt I can get these in the ground; there's too much on our plates outside already without having to kill grass and create more beds, and the ones we have open don't get much sun at all. Considering how much water brugs need, I don't think they'd like it along the perimeter of our fir trees too much, or buried with their feet covered with creeping buttercups, right?
OMG!!
Sorry Howie!!!LOL!!!
Yep,It's all over now!
You will be a great Brugmommy!!
Pots are great when you don't know how one will react to the sun in your area. If it looks like it needs shade, just get out the old two wheel dolly or the little red wagon and away you go. Jo would be proud of you if you get them to grow and bloom. Hey, back to pots....they are easy to bring into the garage in case of frost and if they are loaded with blooms or buds and if you want to winter them over as big plants, you don't have much to do to them until spring. I'd save more in pots if I just had more room and no stairs to deal with. You will do great with them. In pots you will have to fertilize more, but if you have to water anyway, it isn't a big deal. I've been known to sprinkle a tablespoon of Peters or Miracle Gro on the top of the soil and use the garden hose to water it in. I get lazy when the weather gets hot.
Considering my track record with most tropicals, I don't know about that, Root! These have a considerably high "wow" factor, though, so maybe...
What if I planted them around the perimeter of the firs (I'm talking in the sun, but out about 15' from the trunks), but left a depression around the brugs so water would stay there and soak in?
I could imagine lying on my hammock in the evenings, smelling those good brug smells. Listen to me talking, she who has never smelt a brug in her life!
Here, Kimberley, sleep with this pod. It won't hurt you...
You are going to love it. Since I've never had any around the firs or pines, I can't say how they would react. Will the soil be acid there? Maybe someone here has grown them around the pines/firs and will come in to advise. When you smell that first one, put Howie to work figuring out how to bottle the fragrance. You would be rich quick.
lolol Kim! Im so excited for you! Im tellin ya, seriously... if I can do it, you can absolutely do it. They really are pretty forgiving. Just keep an eye on them, and they will tell you what they want. With all the wonderful people here, even if you cant understand what they (the brugs) are saying, post a pic, and someone here will interpret. Its wonderful! You will have blooms before long!
How would they do planted in wonderfully rich soil with creeping buttercups at their feet? I noticed Monika has annuals planted in with some of her potted brugs, so would mine be okay in the ground with shallow-rooted stuff growing in the same place?
This is where I was thinking, right HERE:

Great looking groundcovers. I think I'd go the pot route or even over by the fence. I'd hate to have all those pretty ground covers with a big old brug standing up out of them. Hey, it's your place and you know what kind of look you want to achieve....so again...the trial and error thing. Have a ball. I'm sure your brugs will look great no matter where you put them.
Thanks, Brugie. The groundcovers are done blooming now, of course, but they sure make for a pretty May in our yard. I don't think the brugs would get enough light over by the fence...Our coreopsis and some other sun-loving plants are stretching toward the sun along that spot. I might try a few, just to see what happens, though. That gets afternoon sun, so might be too hot in July and August -- 90's and humid?
Maybe you could hide the pots in those ground covers (which look wonderful cascading over your wall ), or plant something at the base of the Brugs to cascade over the pot to disguise it. Of course if you have beautiful Pots you won't need that.
I think they would look great growing there, but if they are in pots, you could move them to the shade if needed during the hottest part of the day.
Like Brugie said ........ have fun experimenting. This is my first year with Brugs and I hope to learn a lot this year too.
They grow faster in the ground and require less water GW. These are fast growers. I just love that you are finally over in this forum!
No doubt about it..........you are addicted now!! Your place is beautiful and I know you will find just the right spot for it.
My mom and I drove out to visit Rosiesplace and Yvonne this afternoon. WOW, what nice gardens they have, from veggies to perennials and bulbs to brugs. I was in critter heaven, too, being nudged, licked and nibbled by goats. :)
...Oh, and I came home with a big brug seedling in a pot. That's why we drove there, other than a chance to visit. We also came away with several bags of nice "soil constitutional amendments" as I told Rosie.
According to Yvonne, the brug looks like it's just starting to Y...Something about the leaves changing their appearance above the Y. To my untrained eye, it just looked healthy, but I did see what she meant. I just got home and am pooped. I'll post a picture of it tomorrow.
