Have suitcase, will travel...?

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

How about this oh ye container garden fans? I was so inspired after cruising old posts on this forum that I went to the flea market with opened eyes. Funny how it never occurred to me that one could put a plant in something other than a pot! These guys are ready for their summer vacation...

By the way, I know little of rex begonias. What are my chances it will actually survive zone 9b heat? I used lots of perlite for drainage (cut holes in the suitcase bottom) and it is in filtered shade.

That suitcase looks better than some of mine - that I use for clothes! lol Yours is much prettier!!!

Thrift shop - $3!!!!!!!!! No Gucci here...

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Cute idea! Did ya put something in it to stabilize it or just don't figure on moving it till winter?

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

Its a pretty stiff one & its totally filled with perlite and soil. it holds itself up and I can even move it around. Its sitting on a couple of bricks to allow drainage. I can definitely seen doing another one. I'd love to see a whole garden of suitcases, like a "world traveller" theme...somebody into funky eclectic gardening should do it. I'll just have one or two b/c I never go anywhere!

Ones on wheels would be neat. You could move them all over the place. Maybe show up at the airport just for a joke with a suitcase on wheels full of plants.
Of course the airport people might take you seriously and try to confiscate the plants.

Next project in the works - super secret!

Isn't it just amazing and great how many wonderful inspirations can be found here? Over in Garden Talk we are talking about DIY fountains. DelphDiva you probably have some great ideas come on over and tell us what you know.

It doesn't get much more whimsical than that delphiniumdiva! Or does it?? I am watching this thread...

By the way, you do know how to cut a tire planter, don't ya?

No! But you must tell me instantly!

Believe it or not, my family is so well trained that when my dh got home last light he told me about some tires someone had put out for the trash down the street! I couldn't believe it! Now if I could get him to stop and PICK UP the trash for me...

Here ya go: http://mercer.extension.psu.edu/Agriculture/TirePlanter.htm

But you have to choose the right tire.

Thanks TC - got a nice well worn one in the trunk right now! Now to find a sharp knife...

Good luck D-diva, and be careful and have fun. Be sure to post a photo when you get it done.

Boy, you get a LOT of ideas by visiting threads in DG! Whoda thunk? A suitcase!

TC thanks for the link and sharing your planter. It's been many years (...nearly hundreds - it seems...) since I saw tire planters. Back in the fifties most were painted white and planted with marigolds sitting around rural mailboxes. HEY! MAIL BOXES! I have some of those! See ya! (Julie leaps out her chair with visions of PVC pipe and mail boxes looming in her head...hmmm...Million Bells!)

:-D

Julie I wanna see the mailbox!!! I have one staked next to my chicken coop in case the hens get any mail, and since they hardly ever do, I'd like to plant something in it, kindof falling out the front. Not sure how to keep the soil in though. Have fun!!! :)))

dd,
------the neatest garden use for a mailbox I have seen was in a post of Brugies.
***********I guess she has one out in her expansive gardens , painted all pretty and wire wrapped around the post for climbers. The best part is she uses it to keep extra small tools in it , to save trudging alllll the way back for something.
......If I didn't remember this correctly , I'm sure she will be along =))

Diva...I went out this afternoon to see if I could find the million bells, but I wanted purple and white...all I could find were terra cotta. Anyway, I ended up taking my granddaughter out in the woods to photograph whatever and the mailbox took last place in my "Senior memory" :-D

Scooterbug...I use my BIG mailbox for an extra set of hand tools, sprinkler and gloves (just in case I remember to put them on BEFORE I yank the Poison Ivy!)

Maybe tomorrow, after I get my beans canned, I'll be able to think about that project. And *if* I get to it...I'll be sure to post it.

Actually Julie I have a brainstorm - think I'm going to take my Rotozip and cut a hole in the top of the mailbox; then I can pot in a pot of whatevers growing, change it out with the seasons. That way will still look like a mailbox.

Ahhhhhh ! Women and power toolz. Look out world ....... hahaha .........

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Diva...that's GREAT IDEA! (now...I have to wait until my husband is away from the house...find his saw and do me one too! :-D )
