REALLY STUPID QUESTION ABOUT COLEUS & CALADIUM

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

Are they annual in Ca? Before I get too attached, I'd like to know if they are going to go away. Sorry I can't post photos. I have a new computer & I still haven't figured the photo part out. My caladiums from the co-op are popping up like crazy, wish I could show everyone.

I grew both as perinnials when I lived in San Diego....In fact they just kept on growing constantly. I use to cut my coleus back several times a year so as to keep it bushy and not so leggy.
I'm sure an actual 'expert' will be along shortly to give you better info however :-)

HI B2B,

Caladiums and coleus are considered to be tropical/tender perennials. As long as the weather is good, the coleus will hang out with ya, the caladiums on the other hand will go to sleep in Oct or Nov. and wake up again in the spring.

B2B,

The only concern on the Caladiums is moisture in the winter. If you have wet winters, or a place that they'll get watered by a sprinkler system during the winter, they are susceptible to rot. Outside of that, they should come back each year.

I agree. They grow here as perennials and the Caladiums do die back in the winter...but pop back every spring. They get from 100" to 160" per year of rain...and the soil is mostly cinder so they don't rot...perhaps that is the secret.

Aloha,

How much of that rain comes during their dormant period? We get comparable rain amounts, but it's from May til September or so, for the majority of it.
