Here is a pic of my 4 year old pony tail palm. It's leaves drape the floor. It is about 3 1/2 feet tall. I have it planted in a strawberry pot as I had other plants in it that didn't make it.
My question is if i should transplant it into a larger pot and if so how am I going to get it out of this pot? Help.
Pony tail palm
How about if you take the pot outside and drench the soil with water. Even washing away some of the soil. Let it stand wet for awhile. Then try to remove the plant. Looks like now would be the time to replant it, before it got any bigger.
Nice one Debby!!
Am I seeing Tombstones picture wrong? That Strawberry pot looks huge.?
Rootdoctor, It is! and it weighs a ton. It stands about 18" and is about that much in diameter. It's made of terra cotta. With it full of soil I have to slide it to move it. It's in my kitchen and takes up quite a lot of space. I'm afraid to put it outside as it get pretty dang hot here.
Oh OK Jan,you want to size the pot down?
Well, I would like to take it out of this huge pot and put it into a more manageable pot. I did have other things growing in the strawberry pot but they didn't make it. So a regular flower pot would be better. I haven't tried to remove the ponytail yet but I'm assuming that it's going to be somewhat of a chore. My question is if I disturb the root system is it going to harm the ponytail? Sometimes I feel so dumb about these things. But I quess that's why you all are here. Right?
These guys don't mind "pretty dang hot" at all! Mine stays outdoors year round in full sun. We get about 5°F hotter than "pretty dang hot" at the height of our summer!
Carter,
You have a lot of humidity there though, don't you? We are high and dry here. The only time we get humidity is just before the monsons start. I suppose I could give it a try though and see how it takes the heat. My plants are as spoiled as my dogs. Everytime I lose a leaf off a plant I panic that I've hurt it in some way. I will move it out to my front porch and see how it takes it for awhile.
Yes, we have major humidity here. Some days you can practically swim outdoors. I may be mistaken, but I think ponytail palms originate from hot, dry places, though, hmm? I can't quite remember - I'll have to do some research.
