I can not seem to get mail,so I apologize if you are trying to reach me right now.
I have a question,Shirley,Susie or Kell,Monika,or anyone else that can answer.
I pulled pollen off Tropical sunset,I have it in a baggie in the crisper,I am planning on crossing with Species,it will open tomorrow.
Question, should I dry the pollen, freeze it till tomorrow?
Is there a problem with Species as a Mother?will she hold a pod? is there a problem with TS as the Father?
Any discussion on this is welcome and thanks.
Poppysue,have you tried this cross?
Mail problems.
Rooty, If you're going to use the pollen tomorrow there's no reason to freeze it. Let it dry and keep it in a cool place. It will keep for a long time in the fridge.
I haven't tried that cross... I don't have species. It would be wonderful to get TS color on a double bloom!
I used Species last fall with no problem. Species x Pretty in Pink.
I wouldn't freeze either and even if in the fridge you'll have to come to room temperature.
Good Luck Root.
Go for it Root and share the results! LOL
Liz, you bring your pollen to room temp? I take it out of the freezer, walk to the plant and use it and stick it back in freezer. I am sure I get pods. LOL. Maybe I do not! LOL
Edited to say Root, Brugie has been trying to get hold of you all day. Did you get the 2 emails I forwarded to you from her? I just got in and have not read all my mail so if you already told me, I apologize. I will not get it all read tonight!

Kell,I know you have been busy,I got your 2 forwards,I think I have it set right now,I had 78 mails this morning.
I hope to hear what Monika says, maybe TS is carring to much Suave to use,I am looking a pouring rain,so I don't think I will be doing an crossing today.
Root , I will be interested to learn of your success with Species crossing. I have what I think is Species in bloom but have nothing to use on it, maybe soon as there are still young buds on Species. Hope you get good weather soon. Actually the weather man is predicting that we may reach 80 by end of week, it is the very cool nights that aren't good. Now at just after 6:30 it is still only 40 degrees outside and not a whole warmer inside. i don't want to start my furnace this time of year!!!!!!!!! Donna
I used Rosamond and Kyle's Pink on Species (yes, two different flowers) last fall & got two big pods & lots of seeds. The pollen came right out of the Dads.
Donna - It's only 42 over here on the "warm" side of the mountains. Brrrrr.
I am going to be intereted to see if mine opens like yours Donna, this will be a first time for me.
Sewcrazy,I hope you are growing all those babies out, could be a nice cross.
How do you decide which ones to cross??? How do you decide which one will be the mom or pop?? Is it possible for the mom and pop to both have seed pods, that is, could each be pollinated by the other??? I have a bazillion bees and 1/2 a bazillion butterflies - do you think they might have pollinated my brugs, and, if so, how long does it take for a seed pod to grow????
root, I haven't planted them yet but I will soon. The crosses were done in late Nov. in the greenhouse. The Species x Kyle's Pink pod was ripe (turned yellow) & picked about a month ago & the Species x Rosamond pod is just starting to ripen now. Our nights are still mostly in the 40s so they took their time. Species is in the greenhouse but the heat is off and it's only a few degrees warmer in there at night.
I was too eager & planted a whole pod (100+ seeds) of a Rosamond x Rothkirch cross. There are 60+ babies so far. Yikes! There is definitely going to be some culling around here in the fall to make room for all these young'uns.
