What is this???????

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Have two problems here. Problem #1 will have two pics, Problem #2 will have one.

First Problem: Something is happening to two of my Brugs (one Suave x, the other Isabella x) It doesn't look healthy, and when you touch the spots, the leaves are thin and weak in those areas.

Pic # 2 of problem #1.

Second problem: This is a Suave x. Doesn't have the problem as above, but the leaves are not as green as my other ones. Any suggestions?

Karrie, to me the 1st 2 pics look like maybe a burn of some sort. This is what happened to me when I used a q-tip with alcohol on it to get rid of a few whiteflies. Maybe someone with more knowledge, and in your climate will come along and help.

We sure haven't had alot of sun! Wonder what it could be!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Could be fertilizer and then the sun hit it and burned it. I did that to some of my seedlings that got too close to the light they were under. Other than that, I have no idea. Also, some brugs just naturally have lighter color green leaves than others. I wouldn't worry about it unless it shows other signs of not being healthy.

yeah, i agree. look like fertilizer burn to me too.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Problem #1 does look like some type of chemical burn to me also.

Problem #2 may just be a case of that type of brug doesn't get as green as others, I have some that get very dark green and some that don't, different brug leaves have different colors.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It looks like a burn, caused by chemicals.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Hmmm - like accidentally spilling the fertilizer on the leaves, when I fed them? That is the only thing I can think of.

So, I guess my question now would be, will they survive? Should I remove the damaged leaves or just leave it be?

I've been using Kaufmann's Brug recipe, minus the ag molasses, as I haven't purchased that ingredient yet. I had used miracle grow in this, prior to getting superthrive. Wonder if that did it, if it had spilled or splashed on the leaves.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I can't say anything about the Kaufmann's recipe, but I foliar feed my brugs with Miracle Grow a lot and have never had a burn.

Ya know, I am wondering if it couldn't have been the Senske man. I didn't move my Brugs, because we decided not to herbicide this time, and just throw a granular fertilizer on the lawn with iron, because the grass was turning brown. I wonder if some of the "granulars" could have hit the leaves and caused this. Whatever it was, it only hit TWO of my brugs, the smallest ones. Maybe the other 3 were tall enough that they missed it.

What to do now.........

I have also had that happen when the plant is in the sun & it just gets a bit of water on the leaves. I guess the sun either heats up the drops enough to do that or the drops act like a lens & magnify the heat where they are.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I would leave them alone and just go on. They will be fine and eventually, those leaves will be toward the bottom and can be removed for looks.

Thanks! I was hoping to hear something like that! :)

I'm probably goofy, as well as a very green newbie, but I would say that the reason the leaves on the 2nd problem brug are not as green as other is because the plant is growing so fast, and doesn't have time to 'green up', before it's on another growing spurt, it surely looks plenty healthy...and, it could be that you have a variety that the leaves just don't get as green as others. I have some like that and, I'm like you, thinking something is wrong, when that's just the way it is with some brugs....

Late to come into this one...I've been out of town. Karrie: the beauty of my recipe, is that there is nothing in it that can burn a plant. I have used it (not recommended) in the heat of the day to foliar feed and have never burned a leaf, but I do agree that the first photo looks like a chemical burn.

Gretchen, I do think it was the Senske guy, and he got some of that granular on them. Next time he's out, I will move them far far away from where he does his work (like in the driveway - thank goodness for pots!)

I don't even want to talk to him about it, because he is so yacky he drives me crazy. Within the first time I met him, I learned his whole life's history, including the fact that he had a pet chichuaua dog, no girlfriend or wife, and I thought "no wonder- he and his doggy can just yap at each other" Nice boy, but can't shut up. I don't even want to be here next time he's here, lol! OUCH - hope he never visits here, but don't think that will happen.

I have been keeping a close eye on all of the Brugs, and notice little "water spots" as mentioned above, but this other one really does look like a chemical burn. It is not your recipe, because I don't water the leaves with it, and pour it directly into the soil.

Sherry, this one that isn't as green is one of the same Suave x (people know me to call them Karyn Riggs, lol) and they were never that color. However, this one did go outside earlier than the first two, because weather was permitting, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

I gave one of them away to my neighbor Cindy yesterday. And she's going to keep an eye out for me this weekend when I'm at the lake. She said she'd shelter them if we get a storm, but the weatherman says it's supposed to be nice. Like they ever know..........

I have such wonderful neighbors (gardeners as well). LOVE them both!
