Spider Mites....

Tremont, IL(Zone 5b)

I have Kyles Giant White & a few others, but KGW is the only one I'm having problems with spider mites. I've put systemic in the soil of all of them, but for some reason KGW is still vulnerable. Does anyone else have problems with this one?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I do not have that brug. I use Neem oil on my mites if the brug is not too big. Avid is a good mite killer. Ma Vie swears by a alcohol, soap and hydrogen pyroxide mix. I am going to try that one soon. Good luck!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Right now.. several of my brugs are all cover with SPIDERMITES!! HELP!!!!! I want to cry!!!!!!!!

I guess I will try Avid first then next alcohol, soap and Hydregoen pyroxide mix..

I couldn't remember where can I buy Avid at?

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I just did a mass spraying of malathion, the whiteflies were bugging me, and I saw some webs as I was spraying. Will do one more good soaking in about 4 days, and pray that helps.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Tricia, you can buy Avid from Rosemania.com but it is 100 dollars for the 8 oz. bottle. It will probably last you a lifetime, but the initial cost will kick you on your seat.

Here is a site with some good reading and information about control of mites. http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2012.html

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

I have them right now too- and its only affecting one of my brugs-- but not my Kyle's Giant White, they're on my formerly healthiest brug (unknown variety at the moment). It was odd though because I had it sitting right next to a DS and it still has none.

I've been doing the H2o2, soap and water mix- but am having to do it everyday or they come back with a vengence. I feel your pain!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

LOL ok so malathion isnt good on spidermites. Oi.. thanks for that link Shirley!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Neem Oil is great for them and it is not so toxic I do not think.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I just shot everything with an Ortho Systemic,I will see how I like it,took 3 gals to hit them all.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I have neem oil, but I either mix it WAY too strong, or my plants just do not like it. The leaves yellow and drop. I read up on it before I used it. Seems less toxic than the diet soda I drink. I dont know anymore.
Gosh root! I used 1 gallon, and went around the house twice! lolol

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You know Shelly, I remember reading a post by Monika that said brugs do not like oil. But I have used neem oil on all of mine several times, even baby seedlings, and they love it. They actually look better after I use it then before.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i have KGW, but it does not have any kind of bug in it. i always foliar spray or hand spray with the alcohol/H2O2 formula on it. so far, my worst enemy right now are grasshoppers, which i still have not found anything to fight them with. they too quick to jump so i can not hand pick them. anyone got any suggestion/s???

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

a kitty?? :o)

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Shelly, we have a dog in the yard, the dog can not cope up with the grasshopper either LOL! lots of stray cats roaming around the yard too.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

lol Mavie, then I dont know... Pesky little things those grasshoppers!! :o)

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

we sure can laugh about it in conversation, but not really funny seeing those big holes they create on plant leaves. mannnn, can them critters gooble up the leaves in hardly no time.

another one i noticed that create them big holes on the leaves are either Jap. or Potato beetles. they all are pain in there rear! at lease the beetles i can pick with tweezers and throw them in.... i made a nice bath for them with 1 c water, 1/2 c bleach and 1 tbsp of soap. may sound cruel, but that is the only way i know how to get rid of them. otherwise, they will infest or decimate all my plants. there is one brug the Jap. beetle totally denuded, only the trunk is visible.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Get a chicken!!! My hen loves to eat the grasshoppers.. I would find and give to them. They chase a hen with grasshopper around.. Funny to watch!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

What do spider mites look like?

I have some very tiny spidery looking "red" mites crawling around outside. Not as bad as last year, though.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Praying Mantis maybe...

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Ma Vie, this page has some organic grasshopper controls. There's a couple of do-it-yourself recipies too.

Karrie, these are spider mites. Your red mites sound like clover mites. I don't think they'll hurt your brugs.

Good call Shirley! http://www.ourgardenpests.com/Grasshopper.html

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Wow Shelly, that was a guess on my part. I had just ordered some egg sacks or I would never have thought of them.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I did too Brugie. I have them in the house, nice and warm, and am waiting for them to hatch. I read some place that you can not tell by looking at the case if the have hatched or not. Every day I peek at them to see if they have done their thing. Its been almost 4 weeks. They say 6-8 weeks to hatch. I sure wish I had more patience!

Tremont, IL(Zone 5b)

I bought some 'Safer Insecticidal Soap' sprayed that on & it seemed to get rid of them, just have to spray them about once or twice a week. I have a few other burgs, but the spider mites don't seem to bother them. Go figure. Must me that Illinois spider mites have different preferences. lol Thanks everyone for the dif. links, & suggestions.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I've been reading with interest, I've got spider mites. I can hardly see them, but for the fine web. It looks almost like dust under the leaves, but it'll turn my finger and thumb a rusty colour when I rub it off. At times I can see a few spiders in the webs, but they're teensy. I've been spraying with a light oil (Eco-oil) diluted with water and it seems to help but I have to repeat at least weekly.

MVR, I'll get your recipe mixed up and try that next. Do you recommend using the recipe with the oil more often, the H2O2 more often, or alternating them evenly?

thanks for links Poppysue :D. i will give it a try.

Linda... here is the formula i posted on the thread "AP works wonders", if u got time try to read the entire thread, u might pick up a few pointers.

using bottle sprayer:
2 tbsp. H2O2 or alcohol
1 tbsp Palmolive soap [is wetter than water which is why everything u wash in it is squeaky clean]
1 tbsp MG 15/30/15
fill the rest of the bottle with water. spray on the plant.

for foliar feeding:
1 c H2O2 or alcohol
1/4 c Palmolive soap
1/4 c MG 15/30/15*

* using the MG will be ur indicator on the foliar feeding bootle that the concoction has ran out. so refill again if need be. since u are spraying the bugs to go away, why not feed the leaves too LOL! several jobs incorporated into one, plus u save energy and water :D.

i noticed last year, after religiously using the above formula, i did not have any bug problems when i brought some of the plants in for the winter. NO whiteflies, no aphids, no spider mites! i spray early in the morning or late in the afternoon. i have no problem spraying in the after noon since it is always windy in the Upper Desert, plants have chance to dry up after spraying or watering.

when it comes to oil, i only use Murphy's oil... it is all natural - derived from vegetable oil. i try not to incorporate oil when i foliar spray, due to the intense heat in the desert, but i do add Murphy's oil during the cooler months.

using oil allow the solution to sort of stick to the whole plant. that is the only reason i know of, maybe somebody can explain it better than i do.

when i say alternate use of alcohol/H2O2, i mean if u spray today using alcohol, the next time u spray use H2O2. the reason u would want to alternate alcohol/H2O2 to avoid them critters to get accustomed or immuned to one particular ingredient. it is ur choice as to how often u would like to foliar spray. if i see some bugs, i do foliar spray everyday. otherwise i do it every other day. i do these religiously and no end to it, it seems, but it will pay off in the long ran, specially during winter months when i bring in the brugs in the house. there are no white flies or any bugs that attack in the winter time. i hope i am able to clarify this subject.
