Growing with my brugs to keep them company.
daturas in bloom
Oh that looks beautiful! How thoughtful of you to keep them company! :o)
They are very pretty. It must be the company and the FL. climate lol!
Lisa, your datura is just beautiful!!
Now,you got me wanting to grow this one, too.
If you get seeds-please keep me in mind.
christmas, I probably have some seeds. Email me.
Wow, they sure are beautiful... Thanks for sharing the pics..
LL
Very pretty. I love the color and shape of this one.
rylaff, your purple dats are beautiful. Mine are so small compared to yours. I know they grow fast once they get started, but mine are still a looooooong way from looking like yours. Donna
Lisa,you have mail :)
christmas, I did not get any email from you.
Will try again.
How large are the blooms on these?
Christmas, still no email. rylaff@cox.net
woodspirit, I had to run out and measure. The length of the bloom is eight inches.
Lisa, I'm going to try sending you email from here.
I can get mail-can't send any. Hope it gets to you this time.
When it's said that daturas take and, or need full sun, does that mean full zone 8a sun??? I mean scorching sun, with dry conditions. So many plants say full sun, but cannot take the zone 8a sun.
Some datura grow wild in the desert, so your guess is as good as mine.
they are growing wild around here. what is funny is they are prolific bloomers without being watered. the leaves are bright green, of course flowers are droopy during noon time, but are perky and very much alive in the early evening. i see them in the middle of empty lots all over the area.
i did not plant any Dats. this year. i got sick of the Jap. beetle that seem to attract them. the only ones growing around here are the ones that pop up of nowhere, i would assume the seeds are distributed by the wild bird in the area. these pop up daturas, i do not water either and are exposed to the hot sun all day long. so far, i have not seen any bloom yet, but are growing on their own.
i do not have the heavy infestation of Jap. beetles this year, compared to the previous years. what is so funny these Jap. beetles appear on the areas where the Dats. were planted last year.
i do not have the big holes on the leaves on the brugs like the previous years. only a few holes if i catch 'em Jap. beetles in time!
this time last year, as i saw them Jap. beetles on the Dats., i also saw the caterpillars, which i do not have this year. thank God! jmo.
Love this color purple.
I am in 8b and mine are in full sun. Every now and then they get a little droopy like brugs do sometimes. A little water and they perk right back up.
Very pretty blooms and it makes me wish I had some growing now. I do have a few seedlings and hopefully, I will have some as pretty as yours.
If they like so much sun and heat, how will they do i my zone 6b, with lots of rain?
There are daturas growing wild right here in Dermott AR, they are beautiful and called Jimson Weed, growing wild, or Angle Trumpets at the nursery. One person told me it was illegal to grow Jimson Weed - I said, well, I certainly will not ever do anything illegal, I ONLY grow daturas, LOL!! The first time my daddy, almost 89 saw a datura, he said, Sister, that's Jimson Weed and you can get put in jail for growing that...I told him I have a couple of good lawyers...
very often "poisonous" only means it will get you high. Of course, you can overdose and get into real trouble..
Thanks, woosspirit1, I don't have a clue why I didn't know this before now, I'm an AR/LA/MS girl...
Wow Sherry, I didn't know they were illegal to grow in Arkansas. That's interesting...
Gretchen, I honestly do not know but I do not think they are illegal to grow in Arky. I'm thinking this is an 'old gardner's tale', but I really don't know. The DA lives down the street and I will find out the facts this weekend. However, even my nursery guy said he 'heard' it used to be illegal to grow Jimson Weed, but not just in Arky, but every place. I don't even know if Jimson's and daturas are the same plant. Well, the mother of the sheriff of the next county gave me five datura plants, on Wednesday, so we shall see, LOL! BTW, beautiful, white Jimson Weed plants are growing on the bayou, just a short distance from my house. Of course, I didn't know it until I learned that Jimson and daturas were supposed to be the same plant - is that true???????? I've never seen, in person, a live datura plant, so I don't have a clue what I'm even talking about, whew!!!
I think farming communities hate Jimson weed. I don't know the difference in the wild stuff and the datura that I've grown, but there is a difference. I think all can be invasive, but I've never had the doubles come back as volunteers.
Shirley, do you think farming communities might dislike Jimson because it's invasive??? What I've seen, that I've been told is Jimson Weed, appears to be most invasive, but it does die back in the winter...

rylaff - I love the name of your city, Niceville, that's pretty cool!!!
I just know my son in law won't even let my daughter grow datura because he says they are one and the same. I argued with him, but he still refused. I know that in my own flower beds, if I don't keep every single seed pod removed except for one that I want to harvest, I will have them come up for years. I didn't have any last year in my flower bed, but they are still coming up from the year before last. That year I thought I had removed all the pods, but I must have missed one. I don't have trouble with the doubles coming back from seed....just every single I've ever grown.
that's INvasive, intruding onto every bit of space possible. I have the double purple and white datura seeds but now I'm a bit afraid to plant them. I think moon flower (vine)? is related too, right?
Here in Wash. state, what is called Jimson Weed is probably in the Brug-Datura family but only have blooms that as I remember are around 1 1/2" and sort of a creamy-gold with purplish color in the center. I may not be remembering correctly as it has been some time since I've seen one blooming. Donna
Christmas, did you get my email? I need your address.
Lisa-I will try my email again-haven't been able to get in.
Got it :)
