Hi, Marcia!! I'm a newbie too and also in your zone, 8a, and, reasonably close to you in southeast Arky. Yes, IMO, brugs will do great in our zone, I left one out all winter and it's almost 6 feet now. So nice to have you join us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SherryLike
Mbock, welcome to the addiction. You'll want more and more.
mbock, welcome to the brug forum. Hope you didn't go too crazy with your credit card. LOL!
LOL Brugie....whew! Been there, done that! (still trying to hide the bills from DH...hahaha)
Welcome mbock! This is a great place and so many friendly and helpful people!
Mbock I am also in 8a and just got started with brugs last year. I left both of mine outside but had plenty of mulch. One made it, but the other didn't. This year (since my collection is growing) I intend to take cuttings of all of them just in case. Be sure to read the thread started by MaVie about using alfalfa pellets. It was really helpful to me. There are so many helpful people in this forum. I learn something everyday. Jenny
I had terrible luck with Valley Grow brugs, about 2 years ago. They were smaller than a pencil and so sickly. 3 died immediately, I think the rest all followed. Maybe 1 made it. Then I emailed him several times and I was completely ignored. It was a waste of $88.00. I couldn't personally recommend that place ever. I am still mad about it esp when I saw how easy it was to take cuttings and grow them myself. I can't figure out how he got such scrawny tiny ones. I couldn't do that even if I tried. My brugs do not put out growth like that. I have pictures of the brugs, they were so bad.
Welcome MBOCK! Logees always sent me big, fat healthy brugs!
Hi Dave, Brugmeister & all,
I kind of stumbled upon the brugs from a mail-order company. I ordered one, the white variety. It did very well for me. I live right outside of Milwaukee, Zone 5. I grew this guy in my "farm" (which is what I call my fish-growing area...always luminated and heated by a 1,ooo kw growlight.) I grew it in my "grow-beds"...like a raised bed but with fish effluent. It just went crazy and I propogated it profusely and sold a lot of them. I'm now growing a "Peach" and a "Yellow" & will propogate these as well.
I can NEVER understand the problem that people have with propogating or acquiring brugs...they are readily available to anyone with a computer and has the most mundane knowledge of how to operate a "search engine"...e.g. Google.
I love this list...DG...and don't want to step on any toes, but if any one has a problem acquiring brugs or just doesn't want to go to the trouble if searching for them, I would be glad to supply them with cuttings that are guaranteed to grow. I offer "white", "peach", or "yellow".
Again, I don't want to step on any toes, but I can grow and supply them if anyone wishes. Just my thoughts...Lots of luck with everything....Steve...anyone can contact me off list @ stevespring@sbcglobal.net
Okay all - I went shoppin and got SO confused.....of course I want to buy something that will grow reasonably easy - cause I'm kind of a lazy gardener you see - can anyone give me an idea of the type a 'Beginner Burgie' should start with? I'd like to have one with color but it doesn't really matter. Any help would be appreciated. And to SherryLike - hey neighbor! Marcia
Careplus, this may sound like a silly question, but what is fish effluent? I'm thinking it is the water you take out of the pond (to refresh the pond). If that is it I have plenty and will also put it on my brugs. I've always drained it into my elephant ears and they grow like crazy. LMK and I will add this to the alfalfa pellets I am using right now. Might make for a good combo! Jenny
SH1025 - where abouts is Woodville?
Marcia, I have seen ALOT on here that Frosty Pink is a wonderful bloomer. I know if you do a search for frosty pink brugmansia on ebay, you can find them quite cheap.
I have 2 big aquariums that I have been cleaning alot more than I should lol the brugs LOVE that water. I think also Datdog uses her pond water. All the fish poo is good fert Im sure.
Mbock, it is in East Texas. I am midway between Lufkin and Beaumont. We are near the Neches River so I have a kind of microclimate going on. We live out in the country and up on a hill so in the winter it gets quite cold.
I wonder if fish emulsion would have similar effects. Has anyone tried that?
Is that the same? LOL I do not know anything about the stuff. I know I have seen somthing in the nurseries, 'Alaska' and that I use my tank water. I did "plant" a 8 inch bala shark under my rose. It did get new growth, but I think that may have just been the norm.
I use fish emulsion occasionally, but my brugs love the kelp foliar the best, that stuff really works.
I looked for that, because I heard you rave about it Mary, but the nursery I went to didnt sell it. I will have to look at a couple others. Maybe I will call 1st. I went for kelp, and ended up with more plants.
Gosh MBock, sorry to hijack the thread.
Ask for liquid seaweed.
Thanks Mary, I think I asked for liquid kelp.
mbock, welcome to what will become your worst addiction!!
I live in 8a South Carolina right on the edge of the earth just south of Myrtle Beach and brugs grow like weeds here.
I had a few last season upwards of 13ft tall.
As I just informed one lady, yes, you can buy the Alaskan Fish Emulsion (fancy word for effluent) for about $22/gal or you can use any fish waste.....even a dead fish.
Or you can set up a very simple "aquaponic" system by filtering your aquarium water through a grow bed and breed your plants in this. Works wonders for your fish as well as your plants......this is, of course, assuming a fresh water aquarium. LOL.......Steve
Steve - I have one large goldfish in a small fountain, the fish has plenty of room, considerably more than he had at his former home. My question is - should I be using my fountain water to water my plants??? I bought fish fertilizer yesterday, at WalMart - will any kind of fish fert work??? TIA!!! SherryLike
Hi Marcia!!! Great to see another zone 8a gardner here!! I'm a newbie too but I can tell you that the common (without names) brugs I purchased locally, generally make the winter in my area. I put two sacks of cypress or cedar mulch on them and they have been fine.
As for easy to grow, it's easier for me to say which ones have not been easy for me, and that would be Culebra & Maya. I lost my Maya - the Culebra is coming back, but it's very slow going, at this rate, it will be 'years' before I see a bud. Memphis is only 2 1/2 hours from me, assuming I go the back way....
Culebra's characteristic growth rate is so VERY SLOW. If you are letting it die back I doubt you will ever see any significant growth or blooms.
Some Greenhouse growers I've spoken with , have given up on this one as it can take 4 years or more to see blooms on a 3 or 4 ft. plant.
If you have the patience and love the foliage , I would suggest pot culture so you can protect it from the cold weather.
That's discouraging re Culebra, Scoot, but I've always heard it's a dilly to grow and mine is really puny. It died back on its own and I really don't think it will ever return, so I'll just leave it on the back burner and see what happens, it's in a pot. I think my Maya died from root rot and I didn't quite understand it because the rest were fine and all treated the same - I guess the Maya was just one that didn't like the amount of rains we are having. Thanks for your post!!!!!
Sherry , Carefully take it out of the pot and check for live roots , if they are white you will know if it is alive or not.
Rinse the old soil off and repot in fresh soil. Sometimes this does the trick.
Good Luck
I had Culebra a couple of years ago. It was a cutting and only got to about 30 inches or so tall. It bloomed the first year. Not a lot, but about six or eight blooms at one time. However, the leaves would yellow daily and some would drop. It always seemed to replace them, but it just never looked healthy enough for me. There are definitely brugs out there that are much more attractive. I didn't even get a big kick out of the blooms. Cute, small, and not enough of them. Fragrance, nothing special.
Scoot, with the Maya, I did what you said, except I didn't repot it. There was zero white on it, but I saved it, maybe I should stick it in a pot, just in case. It did just kill me to lose it.
Shirley, in the case of the Culebra, if it grows, okay, but if I lose it, I won't replace it. I don't mind lots of stuff, but if it's not pretty and, or healthy appearing, and few blooms & ho hum fragrance, isn't one I'd keep or replace, but I will replace the Maya!!!
I am new to brugs. Bought two this Spring, (don't know the names). Will someone tell me how to take cuttings! I would like to multiply these.
Thanks
Hi Purplepetunia!! I'm new too, but I can tell you four ways to root a cutting, all four have worked for me. 1) put rooting powder on the end of the cutting and stick it in a pot, put in the shade. 2) put cutting in a container of water and sit it in the shade. 3) use rooting powder on the end and plant in the ground, in a not too sunny place, 4) I've also started cutting in those tomato containers and stuck them in and within a week they were rooting and set buds shortly thereafter. If I can do it anyone can. Good luck Purplepetunia!!!!!!! SherryLike
