Looking promising too!
Clare a couple of your seeds germinated
So, what is this seedling you are growing?
How exciting for you and Clare! I always get SO anxious even seeing the seedlings here on the monitor! Congratulations.
Well last spring Clare sent me some seeds, and they never germinated,so I set them aside and forgot about them until couple weeks ago then the slugs ate the leaves off,so I waited until they grew some new leaves again, before posting them,to what they are Clare will have to answer that one.
I just love babies! Mine are half grown up now and I'm going to plant some more seeds, just because I want more babies! Guess I'll make a great grandmother, someday, eh?
Did you only plant one type then?
Tell me something re seeds. Did I dream it or did someone say that natural pollination was 'best'??? I started some naturally pollinated seeds and some other artificially(?) pollinated seeds. More of the latter have come up, but there is on naturally pollinated seed that sprung up yesterday and it is very green and HUGE already, with a big, bold trunk. Is that typical for naturally pollinated seeds???
Karrie,I believe Clare sent me a mix of seeds, maybe she'll see this and can answer your question much better.
Gosh, the first one looks like a perennial woodland flower that has a purple pink spike of flowers. I just can't think of the name. Now this is going to drive me nuts!
Kell,no you have me thinking, what if it is something that was already in the potting soil!!!
Only thing it was in the greenhouse all winter and nothing germinated until I set it outside this spring.
Oh did you think they were brugs? I do not think so.
Well I was hoping!
Not knowing first time for brug seeds.
Well this should be interesting as time goes on.
Earlier in this thread, I asked: Did I dream it or did someone say that natural pollination was 'best'???
I ask again, did I dream this, or is natural pollination 'better'? According to my simple 31 seed test, the naturally pollinated seedlings are by far more hardy than the rest. Just wondering in Arky...
Sherry Like you I think natural would be the best, but there would probably be some orchid growers in disagree!
I perfer to leave things like this up to the birds and bee's!!!!LOL!
I may be crazy, but why should there be any difference? The pollen takes the same route whether placed there by critter or paint brush. Besides, don't you want to know what the cross will be....I would. It comes in handy to know that when the breeding continues in the future. I don't keep critter pollinated seed pods. I'll be interested in hearing if there is anything to this.
Shirley, please remember that I'm a very green newbie (as if you could possibly forget, ha) but how would you know if they were naturally pollinated?? Do you separate the artificially (in the dog world we call it AI, artificially inseminated) pollinated plants from the others and, if so, how do you keep the critters away???
Sherry, if you don't do the pollinating, they would be pollinated by critters. One single brug cannot pollinate itself. When I pollinate a flower with pollen from another flower, I put a tag on the pollinated flower stating the cross and the date. To be sure that an insect doesn't come along and add pollen to the mix, you can close the flower shut with masking tape or put foil over the stigma for a while. Sometimes I will have several different pollinations on the same plant, but each is marked.
Thanks, Shirley and Tropicman!!! It really helps me, knowing what others do, and you guys are so nice to share your knowledge and experience. We have rain again today, so I don't have any idea when I'll be able to get back in the yard to try out all the tricks you are teaching me...
Did you find out what these were? Dats?
Yep these were the shoo fly seeds clare sent me.
