Gold fish?????

I'm planning to get a large gold fish for a fountain. Can the fish stay outside during the winter (we live in zone 8a) and what do I feed the fish?? Have you had problems with cats getting fountain fish?? Any other information will be sincerely appreciated!!! SherryLike
