Brugs in raised bed

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

The soil in this new raised bed is very difficult to keep moist enough for the brugs. Could I have used too much composted steer manure?? I am using a soaker hose to water with. The plants look pretty healthy. Donna

Maybe it would help hold the moisture in if you put a little mulch over the top. I have one raised bed and several years ago I put a single brug in it. I had to finally put a tiny hole at the bottom edge of a 5 gal. bucket, fill the bucket (twice a day) and let it drip to water her. I could not keep enough moisture on that brug any other way.

Root and Brugie, thanks. I do have a pile of limb shreds made from prunings that I intend to use as mulch (when I find time) And I must do that soon, I did spread some alfalfa pellets around them and I want to get them covered up, they have somewhat disintegrated due to moisture. Donna

Donna , Nice looking raised bed. They are notorious tho for drying out quickly.

I would put down several layers of newspaper or any other paper product you can find THEN put your mulch over the paper. This will really , help plus the worms will love it.

Keep using your organic plant food and you should have a nice healthy soil for your brugs. When the paper bio-degrades in a couple months , just push the mulch back and lay more paper down.

Thanks guys, I will try the paper thing, don't know why I didn't think of it as have used paper before. Donna
