dog swallowed golf ball?

My son emailed me to say he suspects his black lab, 8 months old, may have swallowed a golf ball. He had a golf ball on the coffee table and went to put it away and no where to be found. He said the dog is now real gassey and really suspects it happened. Can the dog pass such a thing?
