The infamous Y

Linden, TN

I have a couple of brugs growing from cuttings...and they are about 3 -4 feet tall and straight as a pole. But no Y is forming yet. Lots of little leave thingies growing at the crotch of other leaves though... Will they form Y's? Someone suggested that I "top" it and force it to Y. What do y'all advise??

Thanks for asking this LL, I'm interested too!!!

Topping the plant won't force it to Y... it will force it to branch out and and will take that much longer for it to Y. You'll end up with a bushier plant but it won't cause it to bloom any quicker.

Thanks Poppysue... Is there any way to hasten the Y process? Do we simply have to be very patient and let God do his handiwork with no help from us? Not that I am impatient or anything....lol Yeah right !! ;0)

I know of no way. But if you find one, tell us ASAP! LOL

LL ... i had once a brug i grew from cuttings [must have come from a non flowering area], it grew to 7' high. took nearly 7 mos. before it began to Y. when it did, there was profusion of lovely white flowers from every direction. u got to have patience or u won't be rewarded ;). here are some links to prove patience really works. http://davesgarden.com/t/364274/ http://davesgarden.com/t/367953/

it grew straight all that 7 mos. then it started forming Y's every which way it could. so! the long wait is well worth the patience and effort invested in growing these brugs.

I went into this whole thing, when I planted my seeds last January or February (can't remember, but sometime around there) with an attitude of "I will probably not see any blooms this Summer."

I'm glad I did. Yes, My plants have grown, and are doing well for me - I find them remarkable plants, and even though I haven't seen blooms yet, understand the addiction in them. They are gorgeous. Two of them I put into large, nice (but lightweight planters) so that I can keep them in my living room this winter. The rest will just have to stay in ordinary black tree pots that I got free, because enough money is enough! They will go in other places in the house that visitors don't frequent.

I know I will have questions about over-wintering them in the house, but don't even want to get into that right now, as I will lose the thread in the masses, and will ask at the appropriate time.

Blooms this year? I'm not going to anticipate them. If it were to happen, believe me, you'd all know about it in a heartbeat. I just don't think it's in the cards.

One question though - could they end up blooming in the house in the wintertime? I find that almost frightening!
