Cool pics! Is that some kind of electrical wire the nest is hanging from?

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Yup. I just might be a redneck, them's Christmas lights along the overhang. I use 'em for my 'outdoor lights' Much friendlier than the standard jailyard spot light outside so many skyview killing homes. ... Ooooops bandwagon.

Astonishing sight. I've never seen a hummingbird nest, other than a picture, and we get plenty of hummers in this area. What a thrill you must have gotten when the bird decided to call your place home. Is there some significance to the spot near the bird's bill?

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

It's a coccoon of some worm or other. The baby has fledged I got to watch mom feeding her on an apricot tree branch of course, no camera.
Now I've no idea how to tell them apart, is it the mom like I've always seen on my buddelia, or is it the youngun? Wonder if she'll pass on the secret of drinking off the cedar needles when I'm running the overhead sprinklers.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Did your hummer have a second family like my red finches? That pic you posted today canNOT have been this bird...

The finches have (I believe) fledged their FOURTH brood for the year. I've decided to call that corner of the house the "Bird Factory"... the Audubon site said one couple would raise a second set of eggs in the same nest -- it did NOT say FOUR!

~'spin!~

Yes , she's been verrry busy with this one. The baby pictured above fldged almost the day after I took it's picture.
I'd forgotton this thread - started a new one for this baby.

BloomsWithaView I just read your post of will she teach her baby about drinking the water off the ceders when you're watering. My DH and I were out in our yard watching the world go by and saw one of the little ruby throats doing strange things along our fence and then it would go down on the leaves of the verbina bush then I realized he was what I thought was taking a bath in the water that was landing on the leaves from our sprinkler he did it for quit sometime and we just sat there and watched. We've never seen that before. How lucky for you to have a nest so visible we look every year for a nest even after the leaves are gone and have yet to see one.

I always look for the nest too each year, But have yet to find one! Great picture BWV!
