I love your photo, it looks like an Eastern arrangement. I have always wanted to try these calochortus.

FANTASTIC photography!

Thank you both!

Actually Lenjo, I used to date a Rikka Sensei of the Ikenobo School of Ikebana - I guess something other than lily pollen rubbed off...

;)

I have no idea what kind of plant this is, but it is a lovely subject matter for a skilled eye such as yours. Very beautiful photo.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

faronell: It is related to our sego and mariposa lilies... but this photo is a work of art, Lophophora! I stand in awe!

Once again, thank you all! (blush)
Actually - the praise should go to the Callie, for being such an obliging subject. It's a shame that the many species are not more widely grown - but admittedly, they do have a reputation for being difficult.

Lenjo - I would recommend starting with C. venustus or C. luteus, both of which are commercially available as Dutch selections.

crystalspin - C. splendens *is* a mariposa ;) In fact it grows as far north as Colusa County, though San Diego County is where it is most common. If you were to go walking in the Chaparral up near Lake Elsinore next May, you might find a few in grassy places, or growing with Sage and Eriogonum. Good luck!

faronell - Nevada has got one of the most beautiful species: C. kennedyi,

although, as a desert plant, it's reputed to be almost impossible to grow in gardens. Like challenges? ;)

An example of perfection.

Just looking out for your welfare, I didn't want you to fall over since your centre of gravity might have shifted after reading this thread.

Of course, I should have known you are balanced out by your incredible modesty and in the words of Wodehouse, general Thingness.

And it is of course a wonderful photo! Well done :)

Dear Taxonomitrix -

My center of gravity is firmly maintained by the spare tire I wear around my waist. No worries.

As for the rest of your post, I quote, "Jeeves, this calls for careful thought."

Lophophora,
Your protocol is as lovely as your picture of the 'Violet Queen©'
Calochortus splendens. Thank you for sharing that flower with us, the perfection of our creator is evident in both of you!:-)

Glad with you!

If I didn't know better, I'd think your name was Georgia O'Keefe. Wonderful subject, perfect photographic technique. We're envious of your talent! Pat

Thank you htop, patp & deborahsongs!

(I'm flattered by your "protocol" praise ds - I shall surely mention it to the Emperor next time he stops by to negotiate pork-belly treaties...)

And now I find myself in a quandry, or as the nonpareil Baa would say, "a sticky wicket"...
Y'all mention "perfection" a few times, yet I wrote up a really nasty negative comment about the plant in the PDB.
Perhaps I should revise it to "positive" and say that, at least, it makes a good still-life subject. Hmmm....

;)
