The Genetic 'Y'

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I have some pictures of a Y,a plant must reach this point to bloom.

The one in the first picture will be culled this fall,I will be keeping this one, again, you can see what we mean by a Y.

I love the little striped buds.

This may be a foolish question, but I see many brugs Y'ing at about 12"....once they Y...does the stem grow so that the Y gets higher from the ground as they get older?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Great picture show Root. I can't wait to see this yard in another 6 weeks. Blooms galore.

iIwear those gloves also to keep from spreading germs between brugs.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Excellent pics rooty! They look so healthy! I agree Kell, it will be a sight for sure!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

This one has spider mites,so it is getting a shot of bug juice and is going to have some cosmetic surgery.

I like to clean the suckers off,to keep it shaped,I cut as close as I can to the stem.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

If this one behind the Y was left ,it would grow taller and I would lose the shape I am wanting on this one.so again removing close to trunk.

I like to try to get a small section that is almost hardwood, this one cleaned up nice.

I'm glad you said that about the gloves, Kell. For a minute there, I thought that it might not be advisable to even touch brugs!

Is that why you are wearing the gloves RD? Or do your brugs bite? LOL.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I use them when working on my plants,I would hate to have something wipe these babies out,my yard is so small,a virus would spread quick.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gloves are a good idea for anyone who smokes too. I've got to get another box. I hate having to run in the house to get one each time I need it.

Sorry,I think I have to say No on both,;0( I could be wrong,I have a couple double trunks that look same as yours, and on the first one, there seems to be a healing ring, like it was a side shoot.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Great pictures, Root. Your yard is going be be beautiful.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

I don't know about the pictures-The first one I see what RD is saying, but the second -was that one a rooted cutting? I've received cuttings that were Y's. They do grow as tall as seedlings or 'trunk' cuttings.

Picturelady-that could be why you see Y's so low. I am no expert though-only repeating what I've been told by a reliable source-but I am also going by memory so maybe someone can add to it. Genetically-if your cutting is a branch cutting-their cellular structure is made to be at the top of the tree, so they do not form a trunk, only continue growing as if they are at the top still.

Why do you say a genetic Y? Is that only refer to the top of the trunk? I have one that is kind of a W-meaning it spits into 3 branches at the top of the trunk.

I love the Peaches and Cream-it's gorgeous!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I am just saying genetic,to state they have to make this junction before blooming,it has been confusing trying to explain other things, and the question of the Y always comes up,I just figured I woud start a thread to try and help out,I am far from an expert here,I just have a little experience.
Thanks Ada,I sure enjoyed the Online tour of yours,I have to learn how to do that.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

Ah, I got cha. Thanks for answering! And thanks for the thread as well-boy, my neighbor's think I am crazy already always squatting in front of my planted brugs, checking their tags, taking their pictures, jotting down notes! Next new plants I bring in I may have to sport the gloves too (really give them something to talk about) I never thought about that!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

They are pretty useful,a little hot,I use disposable razors,I know what you mean,I am nuts on them, and my neighbors know it!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Jenks, you sound like me. LOL My Dh says when he looks outside for me, all he sees is Butt and elbows.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Ada how is your back? I was just reading your thread, you OK?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi Root, I'm fine, just moving slow. I'm like you, I have to much to do to have to lie around. LOL

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8b)

Great information for all us "newbies" to brugs. But I have a question that I haven't seen specifically addressed. Is it better to clean all the leaves below the "y" or not. Mine are very leafy all the way up the stem but a lot of the pictures I see have clean stems. What happens if you do or don't?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

abbethel,Welcome,if you look at the last set of pictures, the one I did the cutting on,it had shoots all up the trunk,in the last picture,I have it cleaned up,this is how I like them.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

RD-do you root those side shoots?

and if so how big do you let them get?

What a great thread Root .. you did an excellant job!

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

I was wondering the same thing, Abbethel. I like the standard-trunked tree-form that removing the leaves gives. Like Rootdoctor's 'trees' -- Root, they look great!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

This is a super thread!!! Root, what kinda mulch is that and is that a wooden bench by your fence and, if so, did you have it built or did you buy it and, if so, where??? I love your brugs, wow, they are healthy!!
The verigated, I just must have, I REALLY like it - what color blooms and is it P&C, if so, I'd guess it would be peach, huh?? I guess the grooming is just a matter of one's preference, right?? I'm not sure what I like, in the way of grooming yet, so I leave most stuff alone. I have a single trunked tree that dropped lots of leaves, but has bloomed continually for almost 2 months. The limbs are REALLY getting long, going side ways. After it quits blooming, should I cut the limbs back or wait until fall. There are Ys all over this brug.

One other thing, I have 8 self-watering planter and tomato kits, they come with everything included, I got them at a bargain price and didn't have to pay postage. Have any of you tried something like that, and, have any of you tried a brug in one??? Just seems like I should try one, and I think I will...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Sherry...I did read in another post that one of our experienced brugmasters told a newbie to take her brug out of a pot that had an attached saucer because it would get too much water. Just wondering if your self-watering planters would act the same!

Anyone remember that post?!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks again all,Jenks I do root the bigger side shoots.
I use Cedar mulch,I like it,just me I guess,I have a good source.
I can't take too much credit for the trees,my Brugmeister grew them last year,so I really have to thank Brugie for the trees, all I did was keep them alive over the winter.
Sherry, the bench was a piece of dock,it got torn away during a storm,I found it and brought it home, the 2 stumps are cedar from the same storm.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

I was wrong about the W, since reading this thread, I went and looked and it's actually a Y off another Y. You certainly learn something new everyday here!

Gosh, Root, we have the same kinda funky taste, re the stumps and the bench!!! My Golden Retriever National Specialty is in KC in 2005 or 2006, can't remember which year, but, hold the phone, I'll be looking you up!!! I've got more questions, but I have guests, later...

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Root, a very good informative thread you started. I too like my brug trees to be without leaves on trunk. But I'm such a newbie, this is the first time i have tried to grow brugs as trees. I do see some buds showing on the taller ones. Donna

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

About grooming the brugs - I suppose you should not take all the leaves off the trunk of a young brug that does not have a Y yet, am I correct??? I do like the trunks to be clean, as long as they have a Y.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I do Sherry, some say it takes energy away, but I like to keep them cleaned up.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Yes, Margie, I do recall the post about the saucer and over watering. In fact, over watering is my worst fear. I'm afraid I just don't get it about not watering when they wilt. I do like my brug that has the coleus, sp, planted with it - I figure that if the coleus is okay that maybe the brug will be too. I guess I'll find out if that is just wishful thinking. I'm still going to buy the water meter Shirley mentioned, just to be a little safer.

As for the self watering planter boxes, the instructions say that any plant can be used, but they were developed for tomatoes, and I understand brugs and tomatoes are related. I am going to try one, just to see what happens. If it works, I might start brugs inside next spring and see how works then.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Do Not Try This At Home!!!!
I am culling this Brug,so I thought I would try something.
I took a large rubber mallet and pounded the trunk near the soil.
