A Bud is forming.....

Linden, TN

I just got this Brug a few weeks ago, and was just fixing to place it int he ground. I picked up the pot and ...voila.... I do believe I have a few buds forming on this. It is simply marked B. Pink, so I don't have a name attached to it.

Quick question: I am now hesitateing to plant this in the ground, but do you think it would be safe enought to perhaps drill a few more holes in the container and then plant the entire package, pot and all? I just don't want to interrupt what is going on and mess up those lovely buds...

Thanks,
LL

LL, I'm a very green newbie, but, someone, either Kell or Shirley told me that it would be okay to repot a plant like yours. Mine was a tree and first I took it outta black plastic pot and planted it in the ground, then it bloomed, then I realized it needed to be in a large pot, so I repotted it again, and it bloomed, a second time with twice as many blossoms as the first time. I'm thinking I need to keep repotting it to keep it blooming - they ones I haven't repotted aren't blooming as much or as often as this one - who knew??!! Good luck!!! SherryLike

Just don't plant it in the heat of the day in full sun....wait until it's an overcast day with no sun out...it will wind up losing it beautiful leaves due to shock and heat. I made that mistake, now I'm babying one of mine. :)

Just something that I thought I'd share. I planted it in the morning. The sun wasnt out but boy howdy did it ever an hour later :( Thank God it didnt die so it could have been worse. I learned a valuable lesson. :)

Having been taught the same lesson you learned, BrugAddict, I've started watering the plant to be repotted, real good the day before I repot. The next day, I wait until late afternoon and I pot in the shade and give an ample, but small amount of water and then I water it really well the next day. It's working great.

Wow! Do you ever have buds! What size pot is that Lindenlady? In a one gallon pot, I have just cut the bottom ¼ of the pot off carefully, and as the roots grew into the ground, once they were established, I cut down the length of the pot with wire cutters, and pulled the rest of the pot out.
I know people have tried different things, maybe they will come along and post. But this worked well in my little zone 5.

WELCOME TO DAVES!!!!

Yep, it is just a standard ugly black ol one gallon pot. I have it in a place that gets hot afternoon sun, so I have been watering and fertilizing the heck out of it. The place I have chosen to plant it is in full morning sun with late afternoon shade. I have a couple of brugs in the ground in various places in the yard.... against the deck railing, front and back. This one would be out in the open. Maybe that would be too much sun..what do y'all think??

Thanks for all the input folks..

It gets pretty hot in TN. I would try to find someplace that it would get a little shade during the hot part of the day. However, some brugs seem to do very well in full sun.

Hey Brugie...I know this has been asked before, but what brugs have you grown in full sun and had luck? Enquiring minds want to know! LOL I have some 'full sun' that really needs a brug or two!

Hi Brinda,

Versicolors don't like the heat/sun. Sangs and arboreas don't either, but just about anything else that I have has been able to tolerate it. Some of them will have wilted flowers during the day, but they generally perk back up. Double Peach loved the sun, but it got cool before she bloomed, so I have her out in full, full, sun right now, testing to see how she can take it. ForeverMorr loved full sun too. Butterfly was pretty good as was Pink Beauty. I think they all do better with some protection from the sun during the hottest part of the day.

GM Shirley,

Hey Girl...thanks so much for the input! I'm going to run out and put BF out there and see how she does. I would just love a few brugs around the pool...but of course, full, FULL SUN, so I was worried. I think I'll pick out a couple more and give them a try also! Thanks again!

PS.....I'm Xing my fingers that FM will continue to love the sun! She's a Beaut!!!

Thanks Brinda. I don't know if you will have a problem with mites on potted brugs sitting on cement, but I sure did. Of course, it could have happened anyplace but it sure made me think that I should sit them in the grass. Mites like it hot and dry and cement will sure give them that. Mine that are in the grass get watered daily and so does the grass around the pots and I've had much better luck keeping the mites away. Maybe is was just luck, but I'll be trying it again this year.

Thanks Shirley...I will certainly pay attention to the brugs on the cement! That is so good for you to point out! Heck, I never would have thought about it being on the cement being the problem. Thanks again!

Well, I placed the potted brug into the hole that had been prepared but did not "plant" it. I watered it really well and then watched in like a hawk. At about 2 pm, she started to wilt just a bit, so I took her back over to where it was mottled shade and within just a few minutes, she perked up. Reckon she does NOT like that direct sun for an extended part of the day. I do have other options, but for now, I will simply very carefully repot her into a 5 gallong bucket with holes in the bottom...That way, she can be moved if need be. I want to keep my babies happy, happy, happy...

I think brugs are like any other plant that hasn't been in full sun. It has to be conditioned a little each day until it can handle it. You might try that , starting with morning sun and see what happens. I have about 125 seedlings and cuttings in absolute full sun this year. Just got them all mulched today. We were in the upper eighties and very humid today and tomorrow it should be hotter. I'll watch and see if any of them have problems too.
