Planted this variety this year and was surprised to find it does not grow as a globe, but looks more like a burpless cucumber than an traditional eggplant. We have experienced a lot of rain this spring and summer and they are doing very well. Thanks for the information.

Yes the asian cultivars do look funny to someone raised on the American cultivars. But for me, the taste is totally superior, even to the Italian eggplant which somewhat in between. Ichiban has consistently been the best although I have grown several asian, American and Italian cultivars. Vittoria is a particularly good Italian type.

Hi Farmer dill, I also have this planted this year. Growing great so far. How do I tell when they are ready to pick? I picked the first one off, and it turned out to be green inside still. I pan fried it, and it was still yummy- but I know it wasn't ready yet. Thank you for your help!

It was ready. Eggplant is one of those vegetables that are like summer squash, you can pick them anytime up until they began to ripen, When mature, they are tough and seedy. Have to pick them before they lose the glossy sheen.
