Hardy Brug..

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I had a 8ft tall salmon colored brug planted here that I gave away last fall, apparently didn't get all the roots,so this one might be hardier than expected.
Holes in leaves from the last hail storm we had.

Can you believe this? I keep digging out poppies, roses, hydrangeas, etc. , giving them away. Next year, I have a bigger better plant than I had before. Really believe the old saying, " give and you get back 100 fold".

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

That is just great tropicman. I have six that are coming up that I left the roots in the ground last Fall. The year before I left a Dr. Suess in the ground and mulched up a huge garbage can of leaves and stripped the leaves and the garbage can over it and still lost it and I didn't do anything extra to these and they're coming back.

Might be that the earth is getting warmer yr by yr?
Ground is just not freezing as hard or as much as in the past yrs.
Next week everyday forcasted to be in the 90'S.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

We've been in the nineties but this past week has been in the mid to high eighties. We didn't have a Spring at all.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Did your area have the heavy ice storms this winter and heavy snows, where all the electricty was shut down for days?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

No, thank goodness. Lots lost power but we didn't.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Wow!! This is great news!
With you and Rooty working so hard on these "hardy brugs", us cooler climates may just be in luck lol.
I have quite a few planted in the ground, and will see if they come back.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I'd mulch heavy with straw or leaves,I had straw where these came back, just have to keep the ground from freezing.

I'm in zone 8a, sitting on the border of 7b. I use a whole 3 cubic yard bag of cypress mulch on each of the brugs and Up Right Elephant Ears and, knock on wood, I've never lost a single one. But, we learned the hard way that leaves, hay and pine straw wasn't enough to save my son's Upee, which was right across the way from mine...have any of you tried the cypress mulch???? It is, by far, the best mulch I've ever used, and the best thing, for me, is that it prevents weeds, the only thing, except poison, that I've ever found that would do the job!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Question here, will they grow back enough to flower,if so how tall to you expect them to get before they flower and what time would they be flowering on?
Here zone 6 they are about a half a foot tall now, thwere really gonna have to grow fast to y and flower before the first frost, how tall are yours Sherrylike, they in Dermott Ark.?

TropicMan, last year, I moved the brug in the photo I have attached, stuck it in the ground and walked off, there were only a few sticks coming outta it, I never dreamed it would live. Went back in the late fall and it was 10 feet tall and blooming. That's when I found DG. This year, I covered it with the cypress mulch and it froze to the ground, yet again. The photo attached was made the first day of June, 2004. The wood fence is 6 feet, and it sits on a cement ledge that is about 8 or 10 inches. So, I'd say the plant is about 6 feet tall in the photo and at lease 10+ feet wide. Oh, and BTW, something happened during the winter and now it is two plants, instead of one. It has buds but it's leaves were damaged by a crop duster this week, after I took the photo, so I don't know how the buds will react, but if that had not happened, I would say it would have bloomed by the middle or possibly end of June and if it keeps growing like it has been, I'd say it would be 6 1/2 or 7 feet tall. It sure looks great!

Sherry,
Are your new brugs in containers growing very quickly also? We got the 2 shipments about the same time. How big are yours now, noticeilbly large? Do you think it is because it is in the ground that it is growing so fast or its age?
Lovely!!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I'm blushing, tanks! Margie, my brugs we got at the same time are sorta sitting there. Seems like every way we turn, here, there is a setback. The wind, the rain is causing more plant damage than ever. If they don't dround, they are covered in mildew, and you know how ugly that is, and of course, it's rained all day today, but finally the sun is out. More when I get a chance, tonight was the last, this season, Sopranos...

Nice looking plant Sherry. Hope to see it full of blooms soon.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Wow what a couple zones away, makes that much difference!
Well Mine is just coming up froma left over root, not a whole plant,so maybe I can leave a whole plant and see what comes back next year,Sherry did you have any snow fall this last winter?

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Tropicman, I had no snow this year, but I had ice, and lots of it. If you are going to leave brug out anyway, I suggest that you use a 3 cubic yard bag of cypress mulch, or maybe two bags and see what happens. Cost - less than three bucks a bag. Take a cutting or several, from your fav plantsw, and leave out a couple and try the cypress mulch, doesn't cost all that much and it might work. I pile it up very deep. I used it for years with my Upees and it worked the same with my brugs. But, I would say, in the spring, don't give up quickly, it too mine a long time to come up, to me, they were late, but, oh so worth the wait. Good luck!!! SherryLike

I really think that I am going to give a few a try this year. I have a couple of FP's that I can try. Hopefully they will come back. Thanks for the info TM!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

The ground didn't freeze here this winter, snow was only on the ground a couple of days at a time.
I too have some brugs I can try,My EE's came back this year.
I'm only afraid there isn't enough time to grow and flower, before frost, the ones I have now are about 7 to 8ft tall with trunks about 4inches in diameter, took yrs to get to this, and will get several bloom flushes during the summer. And to believe I got 3, 1 inch cuttings in a small
styafoam cup,and now are 8ft tall.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Tropicman, that's a good reason not to keep them all in the ground over the winter. I will take some in too, for sure my tree, the common one, growing from one trunk - I suppose it would turn into a multi trunked brug if I left it all all winter, and I love it like it is because it has bloomed almost non stop for 2 months...
