Lilies, overhead watering? thirps? help!

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

hello... i have planted alot of lilies this year.. this is the first time i have ever grown lilies... m y tiger lilies came up nice , but not one had any fragrance... everyone i talked to said theirs smelled wonnnderful.. could it be because this is the first year they are in the ground that they have to get naturalized to go their full potential??? also my very first O-lily has bloomed today.. and i went to smell it, well no smell.. of course it was being watered at the time.. and it gets overhead watering.. one thing i noticed (unless its my imagination) is its the pollen that smells... after the watering was done i went back out after they had all dried off and the area where the pollen was has a slight fragrance.. but alot of the pollen is off (maybe due to the watering?) but not only that but the petals look kinda discolored.. is this thirps? some of my glads have this and i noticed a few of my first flowers off of some of my daylilies had weird sick looking petals... what do i do to get rid of thirps??? if it is thirps.. here is a pic of what i "think" is stargazer...thanx for looking and any info would be great!!!! (:

It's either one of 2 things why you do not smell them..........Could be you (Since ALL Orientals have a distictive odor that you can not avoid) or with your first wiff, you took ALL the fragrance off. When the next Oriental is about to bloom, ask for a second opinion before you try it.

Bleek.. u never said what the second one was? also can u really smell all the scent away?? if that is possible then it would be possible that the overhead sprinkler would wash the smell away??? right? i think the smell comes from the pollen... because the other one that opened has a slight smell.. i wonder if temps have anything to do with the smell also .. like roses... when its cooler out they have wonderful fragrance, where-as if its raining or reaaallly hot u cant smell anything.. also debbi-z, let me check my other pics.. this one doesnt show how the petal is kinda washed out.. let me go check and if not i will go out right now and take a pic of it. in the meantime.. here is what is on my other lily leaf.. i cant tell if its affids or what it is?! ...

There are green and black ephids and these are dinately it. A heavy infestation like you have will deform the flower or the leaves. Also, did you buy these new this year and planted them this Spring? If so, it could be that either they had frost damage in storage at the supplier or they had long sprouts when you bought them and the flower was damaged that way.

No rain or temperatue can do away with the fragrance of these Lilies at least not the Orientals. Now on the Tiger Lilies...not all of them have a fragrance.

ALWAYS when looking in the garden, look for aphids...it is a whole lot easier to take thumb and forefinger and pulverise the few you see and prevent them from forming a colony on your plants. Also when watering you could blow most of them off. They do pinch holes in the leaf or flower or stem and damage it so that the foos flow is disrupted.

I hate chemicals, but there should be some available to spray for aphids.

Will insectacid soap kill aphids?

thanx bleek.. i have only ever seen green aphids... i took care of them yesterday i havent seen any aphids around lately... there were some a few months ago on one of my roses... so i sprayed those.. but i have a ton of ladybugs .. and usually they take care of that... this just happpened like overnight... i know like dawn liquid will also take care of them .. they are all gone so far.. gonna go out htis morning and check them again... , as far as the lily bulbs... yes all my lilies are new this year... and some did have good sized growth on them when i got them...as far as the tigerlily... at least half was suppose to have a smell.. ): and not one did.. i even had someone else smell a new one that had opened... i gave up looking for a smell.. this is my first year with tiger lilies, orientals , and daylilies... i dont have any of the A. Lilies.. i have a couple of trumpets and they only have a faint smell... ): but thanx for the info.. (: when they say the lily will be bigger and better next year do they mean the stalk? and more flowers? i think i need a book on lilies...(:

I would think it is more damage from the growth before planting then from aphids.

Next time I would suggest to pust a thread here and ask your "Fellow Gardeners" for suggestions on fragrant Lilies or anything else you want to consider.

Yes, next year you will have a bigger stalk with more flowers and more than likely some small off-springs at the base....just let them grow and be sure to give them some fertilizer 3 x per year.
