Krameria lanceolata

There are 5 maroon sepals that look like petals. The small bloom is in the center.

This looks like a wild orchid of some sort. Very pretty and a good photo.

I am just fascinated with this unusual bloom. The maroon colored sepals look like bloom petals which I thought they were until I did some research and examined the photo more closely. The whole structure is quite small. I had never noticed this plant before. Thanks for your comments.

I am just fascinated with this unusual bloom. The maroon colored sepals look like bloom petals which I thought they were until I did some research and examined the photo more closely. The whole structure is quite small. There is a wonderful sheen to it and it was difficult to capture the maroon without the sunlight's reflection wiping out the color as shown on the back 2 sepals. At first, I was disappointed that these sepals were "spotty" in color. Then, I decided that it was "a good thing" because the actual bloom shows up well. I had never noticed this plant before. Thanks for your comments.

Beautiful image of this bloom. I often have a difficult time getting sharp close-ups as it's often windy along the ridge where I explore, and all the flowers seem to want to dance in the breeze :).

Thanks. I sure know what you mean about dancing flowers! :o)
